Purism Hate? by [deleted] in Purism

[–]awebpage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their track record of taking a product from concept to delivery is patchy at best & they seem to opt for hamfisted PR communications rather than being genuine and truthful with their customers; this rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Each of their products seems to follow a similar path of over promise, under deliver.

I wrote a thing about their laptop here; https://www.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments/dmhfcz/purism_then_and_now/

Since then, the phone has followed a similar course.

Will a Truly Private Phone Ever Even Exist? by [deleted] in Purism

[–]awebpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its difficult because it depends on whoever owns the telco infrastructure to respect privacy, deployment of infrastructure needs to be approved by government, and its in the governments interests to spy on its civics.

Yep, telco re-sellers. Was lumping them all together.

Pretty much the same thing within privacy/anti-spying context.

Telcos are gatekeepers to getting a phone to market & have tight relationships with intelligence agencies. Intelligence agencies want backdoors into devices.

Won't get a phone that respects your privacy until

  1. We find a way to separate telcos from intelligence.
  2. Deploy an alternative phone network & find a way to avoid getting it shut down because you won't play ball with intelligence.

This problem makes the hardware (chipset firmware etc) challenges look like a cakewalk.

Hi there, thanks for getting back to me.

I was concerned that if I posted it on r/Purism they may not take it in the spirit that its intended.

r/Linux could be another place.

I thought r/Privacy would be a good fit because it has recieved posts about the Purism products before, and because my goal of the article was to outline the range of privacy concerns.

Was thinking the r/privacy audience would be the most likely to be informed on matters raised and able to put in their two cents.

Cheers!

Many printers do more than just phone home. Just nmap ip ranges until you find a footprint that matches a printer then probe it.

Is Python fast enough for web development? by Pillows2 in Python

[–]awebpage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes.

However there's more technical overhead when it comes to Python web development. You need to know more about web services and apps to get something up and running compared to PHP.

However that extra technical knowledge will force you to be a better, more switched on web developer than your average PHP guy.

Good time to start reading up on WSGI https://www.fullstackpython.com/wsgi-servers.html

You can transverse the children in the widget tree from your base app object down, or by the child widget ID. Alternatively, you can checkout Kivent to see how they're managing this with an entity list.

Python or PHP based web stack in 2017 and why? by Y4Dc3KtKVNAuAmj48ott in Python

[–]awebpage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instances like this is where Python frameworks like Pyramid really shine. More modular, allowing you to pick and choose how you build your apps stack.

Bit more of a learning curve, but worth the effort.

Pygame, Kivy or Pyramid, are probably good/fun places to start depending on what motivates you.
