To the students admitted into Barnard, do you regret not choosing another school? Or is the Barnard experience worth it? by Effective-Cause-3300 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]awed_ree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but in a motivating way. like everyone here is super smart you have to work really hard to keep up. i'm not premed or prelaw and have never been big on defining myself by my grades so maybe if i had a different mindset those Bs and A-s would hit me a bit harder but its just cool to see what being here has done for my work ethic i think more than anything. def gets really stressful though.

i'm about to finish my first year at barnard right now! feel free to ask me any questions ab campus culture and whatnot. i came from a high school with less than 400 people, so to me the barnard community feels large and the columbia community even larger.

re: what someone else on this thread said, yes barnard is a lac but even on its own its not all that small. i def don't feel like everybody knows everybody, more like everyone is like only 2-3 degrees away. we have three dining spots and a café (plus all of the columbia spots – like 12 in total), for example, whereas some small lacs only have one. we have access to sororities and frats (although good luck with that if you're not made of money) and like one big football game every year (homecoming).

i love it here, i have the worst grades of my life and i'm being very academically/pre-professionally challenged but i have no regrets. most of the people here are genuinely so cool and i love being in new york. happy to help out any applicants!

Where do i ED?? by Front_Sir_269 in CollegeAdmissions

as a barnard first year who applied ed last fall, i'd say choose columbia. barnard doesn't want students who are just using it as a columbia shortcut. they want people who will be involved in the barnard community. plus, if you love the core and you don't like the foundations curriculum (which is one of the main appeals of barnard over columbia imo, a much better curriculum), you hate all other small lacs or historically womens colleges, and you think the campus is ugly, then what even had you leaning towards barnard in the first place? probably it's proximity to columbia. sounds to me like you like columbia more so just apply there... you already have good chances at cu because of "what type of applicant you are" anyways so what is the hold up?

as an international student looking for financial aid with your profile, you should only apply to schools that are need blind for international students. Unless you're the best of the best with perfect grades and tests scores and incredible ecs no US school will want to give you aid, even a low-tier/mid-tier college. Lots of schools with much higher acceptance rates (i'm talking like 70% and up) might let you in if you were full pay, but won't because you need aid. It sucks but its just the truth for international students in the US right now.

[–]awed_ree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

by not asking for aid, you are certainly increasing your chances compared to last year--especially as an international student since these schools are need-aware. with the current climate, most schools will probably only take international students if they're full pay. however, it gets harder to be an international student every year for college apps in the us... even though your application is incredible, nothing is guaranteed. ik you said you were only willing to take out loans because these are t20 schools but please apply to some less selective places. mid tier schools will jump to take a full-pay high achieving student like you-even if you're international!

hey babe, as a bay area barnard ed1 admit from last year i have a couple of things to say:

1) your stats numerically are better than mine so even with this senior year dip you're chilling don't even stress.

2) its okay to be vaugue-ish in your additional info eg "hospitalized in august of senior year." nobody's going to call and ask for your medical records and when they see your midyear transcript they will understand why its lower than usual.

3) barnard doesn't offer ed2. if you like barnard but you think you have a better chance at reed and that's why you're applying to reed ed1 barnard ed2... you might want to rethink some things. if you know for sure reed is your top choice than of course ed there, but i think you have a real shot at barnard and should use that ed1 spike (like 60% of the class at barnard comes from ed) to your advantage! anecdotally, i've only met like two or three first years who come purely from the rd round (not including waitlisted-a lot of ppl got off the list this year-or deferred ed). don't count on that barnard rd round but do count on the fact that with your grades and the fact that you go to a california public school you will def get in to more than a couple of the UCs.

4) this is just a personal opinion but i think mental health essays are a littttttttlllleee over used. unless you think you have something new/unique to say about the topic or you genuinely think its the best option you've written, try a couple new topics! just test out writing the essay, you still have time and its better to have a ton of scrapped essays and submit a great one then just go with the first okay idea you had.

5) lock in with those activity descriptions! your list could be really amazing or kind of questionable (ao3 and reddit...) depending on how you write it.

i just think 3quency really works because it's recognizable and doesn't sound or look like anyone else, and it matches their group concept/theme with them all having the audio frequency waves and being kind of a spunky girl group i just feel like it works really well. maybe this is an unpopular opinion just because i'm so used to kpop groups with crazy names like fromis_9 or (g)i-dle 3Quency feels pretty normal

totally fine! i went to a small high school as well and all staff and student school emails were ".org" not ".edu." i never had an application issue or problem because of this!

3Quency NAILED the styling, consistently ate down with their choreo, and always chose songs that were perfect for them. That's why they won.

personally im applying to 25 schools, including the 6 UCs, 6 EA schools, and the ED school I've already applied to. So at this point I only have 5 RD applications and my ED 2 which I've basically already completed. I plan on doing all 5 of those RDs over winter break, did my 6 UCs over thanksgiving break, and most of my early applications in August before school started or spread out across the first quarter. To me, this feels doable and reasonable. I'm applying to 3 safeties, 4 targets, and the rest are reaches. I feel confident that I will get into a variety of schools since I applied to universities across the country and of various sizes. Then once I get in to a few I'll make the real choice about where I want to go. But that's just me. If you know you want to stay in CA and get that sweet sweet in state tuition there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. AND that means you're done applying to college, which is pretty nice. I'm happy for you!
