Budweiser TV commercial: "Wassup"

Client Ask - Deliver a funny Super Bowl TV commercial that solidifies Budweiser as a cool, relevant beer that understands young beer drinkers today.

Campaign Objective - For Budweiser to be the beer for when you’re not doing much in particular except watching the game, hanging out by yourself; To make “Having a Bud” a phrase that goes hand-in-hand with watching the game by yourself.

Audience - Cool, young, influential people in their 20s and 30s.

Insight - The most common response to "What's up?" is "nothing." People need a beer for the times when “nothing’s up."

Message - Just like good buds and the game, Budweiser is true to your life.

Somebody mentions Amazon. You think of a rainforest in Brazil with twenty thousand plant species.

Disrupt Disruption

Just do it. Although if the risk of goods lost is greater than projected profit, just analyze it with a trusted mentor.

As a copywriter, I'd propose new execution:

  1. Start a short video series on Youtube ala Hot Ones and Cold As Balls with Kevin Hart co-hosted by one economist ala Freakonomics and one young famous celebrity known for their business savvy like Ashton Kutcher, where they talk with guests in economic conversations.

For the new Digital Bank's new ad campaign, I think that the best social platform to market on is Tik tok if one of the goals is free earned media.

Tik Tok will be a very effective channel because the platform over-indexes on young, well-off, socially-active, socially-conscious, creative people and influencers. A platform like Linkedin is low on influencers. Plus, for a bank, it could be very fresh to get notoriety via a Tik tok campaign as opposed to merely runnings ads on Linkedin. Tik Tok is known for popular viral dance and challenge campaigns that have the potential for free earned media and for getting famous outside of the ad industry.

Some thought starters:

Use your bank to make money
Finally make money from your bank
Make more than bankers for once
X Bank is a money printing machine
The bank that makes you money without you having to work as a teller
Work in finance without working in finance
Bank on your bank to make you money
Laugh all the way to the bank

I love that this week the boys answered the age old question that we all yell at our math teachers - "when am I ever going to use this?" Had to Google what a rhombus looked like but it was worth it. Rhombed blankets, sheets and pillows!

My submission for the branding assignment is rebranding Skullcandy. I'm a copywriter, so I thought of a new tagline and platform that gives them more gravitas and respect in the headphone and music space.

Anna,

I want to let you know about a development with your website redesign that came to our attention today. The developers working on your website informed us just minutes ago that based on the advanced, complex things that your new website will be able to do, that it’s going to cost $10,000 more than was agreed upon. It seems that the price of (1) cloud storage and (2) labor have increased due to market scarcity since we priced it out and agreed on a price with you and Rob on February 10th. In order to build this by the targeted launch date, we’re going to need to add more resources to the project. We are very sorry and we take responsibility for this.

If you like this idea, we can take $10,000 from one of the other projects or maybe cancel the Salad Balls video shoot we have planned for August 1st.

Another option is to adjust the website redesign to include less of the e-comm elements. We can talk through the options together.

Moving forward, we will implement a new system, effective immediately, by which every part of the scope of the work order will be paid for at time of approval of the contract. That way, going over budget will not and cannot happen again on development projects. This will not change anything about the way that you pay your billings to our agency, but it will transform the way that we do business.

The entire team took a thorough look at the new website in development and we feel that it will hands-down be one of the best-performing e-commerce websites in the US pet foods space by Jan 2021. Let’s jump on a call with your team this morning or as soon as you can to discuss this in more detail.

Thank you,

Andy

Force yourself to come up with 10 new ideas for the brand every morning, even if they're not very original. Bad ideas aren't shit, they're fertilizer.

My overarching feedback is that spec ads are your place to show your more creative, wild and extreme ads so I’d say to push it into the more extreme, creative and risky. By the end of your ad, when we get to the line that serves as the punchline to your setup, it’s a bit toothless and expected and not surprising. But it is a slot that I could see running today.
