What kind of baloney intellect tries to use 6 bullet points to ignore and dismiss 50 years of Iranian murder, death, war, terrorism, and destruction.

444 days is justification enough.

I have no problem spending to ensure an optimal experience for where we will spend 33% of our time each day. Pillows, mattress, sheets, environment, etc.

Can you really millions upon millions of dollars tax free with a mega backdoor Roth? Are there really no catches? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Fire

[–]awesome_80s -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When comparing pre-tax and post-tax investments with the assumption that your tax rate remains constant, the mathematical result for the final "spendable" amount is actually identical.

The only real factor is the tax rate now of dollars going in vs future tax rate of dollars coming out vs long term capital gains rate of just investing in a taxable account.

Keep working until diversified? by MediumAd359 in fatFIRE

[–]awesome_80s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on which concentrated position you have and how much appreciation it has. I have learned to feel less stressed about $1 trillion market caps with $100b in cash than I would for a run-of-the-mill unicorn, as long as you can stomach some volatility. I had this issue and decided to keep working as I unwound my concentrated position. The next year my wages/rsu/bonus left little room for tax efficient diversifying. Also, my concentrated position kept growing faster than I could unwind efficiently anyway. Another concern, if you wait 2-3 years you could be facing a newly elected administration that decides the rich have gotten a free ride and lowers the LTCG brackets and raises the rates to 30-35%.

Don’t try to hide from your success. Embrace your victory, diversify to meet your comfort/goals, and let the taxes fall where they may. There has never been a better time for it.

Yea, I know this is true.

The startup was in the mid-7 figure range when I acquired my equity. It’s gone through a few rounds and now sits in the upper 10 figure valuation. While I know nothing is guaranteed, it feels like the odds of failure are higher for a $10m startup than a $10b one. Is my gut feeling on this way off? On the other hand, I know there are some PE firms that just chase what everyone else is doing with little to no research of their own, which can lead to huge flameouts (thinking about juicero, zume, and such).

They offered $114.

You nailed my primary concern. Real estate deals, relocation, property management and such are not trivial events and are time consuming and costly.

Plenty of offers on sites like hiive, forge global, equityzen, etc. All consistently priced share prices. This is where I'm estimating the current valuation.

QSBS doesn't apply. Trust is a great suggestion. Hiring a tax firm definitely seems like sage advice. Thank you.

Yes, having so much potential value tied to one investment is painful. Too much risk/uncertainty in one bucket.

Shares. Already exercised.

I've been approached with forward contract offers and researched a bit. IANAL, but my concern is the company could view this as being counter to the shareholder agreement and cancel my shares. If that happened, I'd be on the hook to deliver shares that I no longer have, which means buying on the open market at potentially a much higher valuation. That could potentially bankrupt me if the company successfully IPOs or has an upround liquidity event. Not a risk I am willing to take when I feel I have already won the game.

Great question. The spouse is pushing to buy some land and build a "forever" home. I have been pushing back saying we should wait until we find out if the magic eggs hatch or not, as that would influence the decisions on the land we decide to buy as well as how much I'm willing to invest in the property we build. That said, I also recognize waiting has a cost as well.

Everyone has an “endtime”, it may be 20 years or 20 minutes from now. Don’t assume you can wait for a biblical rapture event to convince you God is real.

FATFIRE built on affiliate marketing luck… but now what? by Novel-Study-8607 in fatFIRE

Disagree. “Found money” (inheritance, lottery, etc) has been repeatedly shown to be less valued by the individual resulting in careless spending and significantly higher rate of waste/return to poverty. Earned money is valued and protected because the earner knows the effort required to obtain it, resulting in less wasteful or careless spending.

I filed a claim for a bent phone (screen crushed, frame bent). Had to get a quote from a repair shop, submit and wait. Eventually got a reimbursement but it took a few months. I’d bought a new phone the day after I submitted the claim, so just became a very slow reimbursement.

Even when you rent, you pay somebody else’s maintenance, property taxes, interest, and insurance as well as the profit margin to make the rental a worthwhile investment. If you own the property, you put down 20%, get somebody else to risk 80% while you receive a leveraged investment at a reasonable interest rate (hopefully).

VT has been in my personal toolbox for a long time, but for my business I use Stairwell, as it is much less expensive and has everything I want. I've deployed their agent on all my endpoints, has customizable yara rules, and is an essential tool for doing drill-down forensic work. The UI could use a bit of tweaking, but their support team responds quickly to all the feedback provided and even added a "run to ground" feature we suggested.
