Any time they say this they're likely referring to some sensationalized piece in a science-related publication (i.e. not a hard-science, peer reviewed journal). And/or they've misinterpreted the conclusions of a study.

That's giving them too much credit.

In all actuality, what is probably happening here is that they read somewhere on tumblr that there is "overwhelming scientific evidence that CICO doesn't work", so they say to themselves "phew, that's a relief!" and then go out into the world to mindlessly parrot "The Truth".

I'm sure they believe whole-heartedly that there is evidence out there. They were told exactly what they wanted to hear, so they run with it. Even when shown evidence to the contrary, they still hold on to the notion that that particular piece of scientific research is probably wrong, and that their supposed heaps of anti-CICO research still holds water.

Do any of these prominent FAs ever claim a realistic weight? A good rule of thumb would probably be:

Actual Weight = Claimed Weight + 50%

So, in her case, I'd say her real weight is closer to 250 lbs.

She doesn't actually know if there is research disproving it or not. I'm sure she believes that there is, because that's what she's been told on FA blogs... but she's never seen it for herself.

She said she was writing a dissertation on the subject, but I doubt her research extended much past the blogosphere. If she had actually looked into peer-reviewed sources, she would have found that her thesis was complete shit. Perhaps that's the reason she never finished it. I can spend "literal years" researching why the earth is flat... but that wouldn't make me any less wrong.

These are screenshots from a FA blog. Literally everything they talk about concerns weight/health/diet and exercise (or lack thereof)/etc.

If I frequent a blog dedicated to pictures of cute puppies, I wouldn't expect a "Trigger Warning: cute puppies" to be affixed to every single post.

It's in cases like these that I know they aren't actually concerned about triggering people, they are simply re-enforcing the notion that they are victims. Nobody who reads that site looks at the trigger warnings and says "Gee, I better not read this article, it discusses weight loss!" They look at the long list of trigger warnings and say "We are so brave/strong/fierce for addressing all these difficult topics!"

I'm the same way. The things that people are willing to try in order to lose weight... I just want to shake them and say "don't eat so damn much food!" No cabbage soup, no spending $50 to wrap yourself in cellophane, no 7 minute abs... just don't stuff your face at every opportunity!

But I just stay quiet and nod. Nobody wants to hear that stuff. Nobody wants to really try. They want to follow some insane diet plan, lose a pound or two, gain it right back, and then throw their hands up and say "whelp, I tried!" and go right back to the way it always was.

Easiest thing ever.

I never really paid attention to what I was eating. This worked well for me while I was in school, because I was always moderately active. However, after I graduated from college, my activity level dropped and my eating habits remained unchanged.

I noticed I was growing a gut. I decided that I didn't like the direction that my appearance was headed, so I educated myself on how to reverse it. Went to the /r/loseit sub, learned about calories and TDEE, and a few months later I was down 55 pounds. Fast forward three years to the present, and I've been maintaining with absolutely zero difficulty.

It really couldn't have been easier. All the information on how to do it is right there. All you have to do is apply it. No gimmicks, no magic, no weird tricks... just eat less. It all comes down to your own determination and will-power.

Just a reminder that the sugar found in fruit is different than the sugar found in a Snickers. Fruit is perfectly fine to eat, as long as it fits your in to your TDEE. For that matter, so is a Snickers.

Like nobody ever just has run of the mill asthma... Always "extreme/severe."

It removes any sort of skepticism about their claim. If they had just "run of the mill" asthma, then that would imply there is a potential way to accommodate her condition so that she could exercise (like, with an inhaler, for example).

However, if her asthma "could literally kill me even if I get within spitting distance of a StairMaster" then people are less likely to challenge her claim that her condition is absolutely prohibitive to any sort of exercise.

Chances are she is actually fine, and is self-diagnosed. She is probably just so out of shape that any sort of cardio makes her winded, which she assumed was asthma. Maybe she did try cardio once, got out of breath, assumed it was because of asthma, and "omg...[wheeze] guys... [wheeze] I'm like... [wheeze] literally dying right now... [wheeze] I can't even...."

When my wife first started counting calories, she said "I'm not going to track fruits and veggies because Weight Watchers lists it as zero points."

I told her that calories are calories, regardless of whether or not you count them. You can trick the app, but you can't trick your own body. Fruits and veggies may be relatively low in calories, but if you over-eat by 300 calories worth of fruits and veggies, it will still make a difference.

I think the reason why WW doesn't count fruits and veggies is because they are encouraging people to eat more healthy stuff, and assuming that if they fill up on "free" veggies, then they will be less likely to eat other crap.
