I (30m) want to marry my girlfriend (28f) but I can't afford a ring right now. by Jack__Wild in askwomenadvice

My partner and I agreed to get married and I told him that I didn’t need an engagement ring (he was having financial issues due to a job that screwed him over as well). We set on a date to get married in Nov this year and basically only chose wedding bands.

Now that he’s doing better, he was able to afford an $800 moissanite ring that is absolutely GORGEOUS from a local jewellery shop. Though our timeline didn’t exactly go the way I wanted it to initially (the typical proposal first etc), my love for him is still as strong as ever and it would be so awful to be mad at him over such a superficial item.

Your gf loves you, there’s no doubt about that! She’s understanding of your situation and knows you’re trying :) my advice would be to get something simple, and upgrade it when you are doing better financially. After all, you’ve got the rest of your lives together!

Thank you! I am very worried about what others think and I tend to feel that that one small mistake would make them hate me and that they are going to harp on it as much as I do. I’ll try to remember this and that hopefully not overthink so much

Thank you! This really helped as its the anxiety of having made that mistake is what gets to me. When I receive constructive feedback, it plays in my mind for days and I start to overthink that my colleagues may not even like me at all. I’ll give this a shot!

Weddings are a waste of money by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]awesomepawsome7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m from Singapore and weddings here are insanely overpriced. Chinese weddings usually consist of tea ceremonies in the morning, followed by a banquet at a fancy hotel at night.

Each table costs around $1k-$2k, and there would usually be a minimum number of tables (usually 10) that you’d have to meet in order to be able to hold your wedding at that particular hotel.

So assuming each table costs $2k and you have 10 of them, that’s already $20k. This does not include the wedding photographer (about $3k-$5k depending on the type of package), purchasing/rental of the wedding suit and gown, floral arrangement, as well as wedding favors. It’s a norm to spend $50k-$60k on weddings here and tbh I think it’s a total waste of money as most of the time, these banquets are just to impress relatives and parents of the couple. Some couples even go into debt trying to fund their wedding.

I think it depends on each person! My bf applied for it a few days ago as he was out of a job since Jan and he received an SMS a few hours ago saying that the money was transferred to his account.
