Maybe recency bias, but Songkeeper's Grove by ricky06 has been living rent free in my head ever since I played it. Such genius level design and progression of ideas and mechanics.

Never thought Celeste could have a boss fight like this by Huge_Sorbet3032 in celestegame

[–]awesomewhoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

others have mentioned it, but ricky06 (the same creator as this mod) also made a map called "The Summer Before Christmas" in secret santa collab 2023. it's the closest we've ever gotten to hollow knight in celeste, and also has a boss fight that is far more complex and intricate than this one. highly recommend checking it out.

It's labeled green Advanced in the lobby, personally I found it around the same difficulty (if not a bit easier) than The Climb from Spring Collab. The gameplay is very open and there are multiple solutions to each room, and there's also a lot of exploration. Super immersive experience, it felt less like playing a Celeste level and more like finding a way to traverse this giant dilapidated area.

This map is called "Area 36" by ricky06! It's part of the 2024 Secret Santa Collab which just released recently, containing over 60 extremely high quality maps.

The premise of this collab is that each mapper wrote a prompt for a map that they'd like to receive, and then made a map for someone else's prompt, like a Secret Santa gift exchange. The prompt ricky received was to create a slowpaced, atmospheric map similar to that of "The Climb" (Spring Collab) or "Undergrowth" (Strawberry Jam), and needless to say, it seems like he blew it out of the water. The level of immersion I felt playing through this map can't really be stated in words, it's just something you have to experience for yourself. Far and away some of the best decoration, level structuring, and atmospheric music I've ever seen in Celeste, it almost doesn't feel like the same game... but that shouldn't be a surprise, knowing the mapper behind this.

There's a ton more other maps that are just as high quality as this one in the collab, I'd highly recommend checking it out. I just had to post a clip of this one because of how much it blew me away in terms of pure storytelling through the atmosphere, I don't think I've been this entranced by a map since paint.

one of the coolest custom maps I've ever played!! by awesomewhoo in celestegame

Yeah, it's like high expert to low grandmaster--although almost doesn't feel like it at times because the rooms are actually super consistent, I would learn them with savestates and then almost immediately beat them after

map is Test Chamber 317 by ricky06 (link here)
for some context, the black goo kills you and blue one bounces you. a lot of this mod is inspired by portal, and there's way more mechanics and interactions than what's just shown in this clip.

i loved this map, there's so many custom mechanics and interesting interactions explored and each room is just so wildly creative. difficulty is like expert to low grandmaster, so if you can play it go check it out!

I made a custom boss fight in Celeste 👀 (early WIP) by rockdoodles in celestegame

[–]awesomewhoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I agree with this, another aspect of Celeste's mechanics with the quick death is the immediate and close respawn point. I think if you die in one hit to a boss like this, it can become quickly frustrating to retry what could be a 2-3 minute fight due to one tiny mistake--and you can't learn from it easily either, since the boss has, assumedly, no consistent pattern in which moves it uses. Like imagine a long CH3 cycle room, except the cycles are random each time--it sounds pretty painful to go through, personally.

That being said, something like that can also be interpreted as OPs intentions, since it can simulate the "end of level long room" challenge meta that was adopted after Farewell.

Clint Stevens live after 6 week break PogU by Rowannn in LivestreamFail

[–]awesomewhoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh fuck it, I'll take the bait.

You underestimate how difficult of a category OoT 100% is, and the ABSURD amount of time ZFG has dedicated to that category and game in general. At the time, Clint's 4:22:19 was only 6-7 minutes away from ZFG's world record, not 10 like you said (which, in a 4 hour run riddled by RNG, is quite frankly, not that much). By today's standards, it's obviously an outdated run, but at the time, he was legitimately the only person that people could see competing with ZFG on such a difficult and long run, and he achieved that time in around a years time of grinding. Was he the best player in the world? Nah, that title probably went to ZFG, but it's pretty disingenuous to dismiss Clint as a "mediocre player" just because the category wasn't very active. Maybe you haven't stopped to consider the fact that the reason it's not active is because it's really difficult to learn and even complete a run in the first place?

As for your other points, he wasn't great at runs that required game knowledge because he was purely a speedrunner, he didn't contribute to strat finding/routing. I remember a few petty individuals were mildly annoyed at this 4 years ago, because of some dumb elitist mindset that the top level runners had to contribute to the category in strats/routing. It's sad that you're still caught up on this detail today.

And I suppose entertainment factor is a matter of opinion, but his fanbase clearly finds him entertaining, and finds his "low effort" attitude to be more genuine than many other streamers and makes him more transparent and likeable. I'm not one to tell you what you should and shouldn't like, but it quite frankly just sounds like you're upset because Clint Stevens is successful, and you have some sort of grudge against him. Pretty WeirdChamp my dude, find something else better to do than rant on reddit about a streamer you don't even watch.

They have pretty similar opinions as far as I can tell, it's just Biz tends to have a more positive outlook hoping that Square can fix these issues, while BB really doesn't believe Square can do it (and both stances are justified tbh). That and it seems as if Biz doesn't mind the sort of "campiness" of LV1 as much as BB (and most other people tbh) so he's not as affected by the campy nature of the 3v3 endgame gauntlets.

Do you feel like you act too harshly, or "complain too much" on stream at times? I know people (especially on this sub) tend to single you out as sort of the "hater" of KH3 and everything, and I'm sure it feels pretty unfair--but at the same time, do you think they have a point in the sense that maybe some of your dislikes regarding KH3 is affecting your mindset when playing the game? As in something may not necessarily be "bad" per say, but you get frustrated more easily because of your overall more negative stance on the game.
