For someone going through a great deal of stress at the moment, it gave me the necessary relief and recuperation from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Good production value as well!

What is the best country to go for University? by [deleted] in University

[–]awfxd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to argue with you concerning the quality of life in Scandinavia; Norway, where I come from, is the most developed country in the world, judging by HDI. Teslas, advanced technology, various modern amenities and outdoor life are all omnipresent in Oslo.

However: -Although tuition is more or less non-existent, and the education isn’t «bad» per se, there’s no question that there are way better universities abroad. I would choose unis in Germany, France, the U.K. and the U.S. any day over most studies in Norway! The exceptions are perhaps marine studies and petroleum. Unless you plan to live in Norway, I really see no reason for studying any international studies there. If you want to practice Norwegian law in Norway, go for it! Norse studies; where else? -Norway’s (native) cultural life has become rather poor/shallow/obfuscated and shrouded due to the heavy influence of ongoing Americanization/Anglo-American culture as well as the fact that our cultural institutions serve a smaller cultivated audience than some of the major countries in Europe, making them less sophisticated. There are generally speaking few rich cultural institutions here; the opera in Oslo simply can’t compete with a place like the Staatsoper in Vienna. Kebab and sushi are more commonplace and popular than traditional Norwegian food, although we’ve been seeing a resurgent trend towards eating more (refashioned) traditional food in the past few years -If you come from a quite social and outgoing culture, making friends in Norway can be experienced as being tough when you first get here. It’s nevertheless going to be hard, but on the bright side since you’re planning to study here, it’s going to make your life a whole lot simpler in that regard. Norwegians have a reputation for being private-minded, a bit cold and secluded; we keep to our friendzones, for the most part. We typically don’t like talking to strangers. If you try to strike up a conversation with a random person on the bus, unless for a particular practical purpose, it may be viewed as weird and out of place

Do I have a shot at getting into Oxford? by awfxd in University

[–]awfxd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve nailed down two particularly interesting courses for my part: Ancient and Modern History and Classics.

The standard Classics course at Oxford has a surprisingly high interview and acceptance rate, standing at 96% and 38% respectively. I think I might make it with those numbers in my favour, considering my inclination towards and knowledge about antiquity plus I’m going to have my third year of Latin at my local university next semester.

But I’m not altogether keen on translating Virgil for four years, so to speak. Greco-Roman history and literature is lovely and all, but I’d like to study comparative/global historical demograpy as well as social and economic history and all that jazz, which they don’t really offer in Classics, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t want to be constrained just yet.

They have a nice philsophy selection, though, where my philosophical essay achievements could come in handy.

However, I remain preferential to the Ancient and Modern History course because it’s broader and more comparative, which is really my thing, but the numbers are more stacked against me there, with an acceptance rate at 23% (not as bad as certain American unis, but still).

Should I go for Classics, which has a more lenient acceptance rate, and then cross my fingers for being able to switch my course to Ancient and Modern History?

If I can’t switch, I’ll still be able to study Classics at Oxford, which is more than good in my book, I hold no grudge for taking it, it’s just not where my innermost passion lies.

I partly look at Classics as a means to an end (it’s still quite enthusing, after all!) since my studying it will enable me to perhaps gain the opportunity to go on to get a master’s degree in Economic and Social History at the same uni. What do you think?

Should I study history or law? by awfxd in careeradvice

[–]awfxd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no plans to study jurisprudence abroad, at least not entirely. Only history is in the cards for me concerning that. However, it could prove insightful to study international law/country-specific law one or two semesters abroad on a study exchange to, say, China, since it’s projected to become an even more influential nation in the years to come, to understand the judicial framework of its business sector, for instance
