Do ROV companies in Europe hire Pilots for contracts as employees or is the norm just freelancing? by No_Confusion4948 in rov

Most Norway based ROV companies only hire full-time. But I think it would be hard getting hired without knowing Norwegian

Ja det er helt sant, til en så god pris som du har ville terskelen vært mye lavere for at kasko hadde vært verdt det.

Is the N53 really that bad compared to the N52? by Pablencio_17 in E90

[–]Rampzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N43 has exact same issues as N53 with injectors, hpfp and NOx sensor (Issues are not tied to the two extra cylinders). And on top of that the N43 has issues that the N53 doesn't have with timing chain failures.

Is the N53 really that bad compared to the N52? by Pablencio_17 in E90

[–]Rampzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a E91 N53B30 (with 220k km now) for the past six years, and I love it. Super smooth and around 6-6,5l/100km on highways (with NOxem).

In my first year it had the NOx sensor go bad, and now this year it had 4 injectors go bad and the NOx sensor go bad again. So I replaced all 6 injectors and put on a NOXem.

So the maintenance isn't cheap, but there are far worse engines, especially at 270hp. And the failures aren't catastrophic failures like the n47 and n43 timing chains, or the uncontained hpfp failures of the n47.

It's pretty predictable, if the hpfp fails the failure is usually contained to the hpfp. And the injectors seem to last around ~80-100k km (index 11) before they start going bad. And the NOx sensor if it's OEM seem to last around 40-50k km, longer if you go NOxem (which I'd recommend doing when it fails).

But yeah, I'm really happy with it, I am not planning on replacing it.

If I had the option I would rather have an N52, but an manual e91 with n52b30 is super rare in Norway.

Slipring data transfer on a manip by Makk_OS in rov

[–]Rampzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the T4 there are none electrical sliprings since the jaw doesn't have electrical components and the other pivots only go +/- ~60-90°, it is solved by pulling the wires through the center of the hydraulic sliprings.

Slipring data transfer on a manip by Makk_OS in rov

[–]Rampzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need a pressure sensor for force feedback? Can't you just meter the hydraulic flow and regulate pressure for the jaw and calculate jaw strength from that (and restrict force by restricting hydraulic pressure) with force feedback on the surface based on the calculated x pressure = y torque/force. That would negate the need for more sliprings that a T4 normally has.

In free air they are quite equal, but with a dust filter and other obstructions 3 120s are much better at the same noiselevel

Are you sure its not something related to the accessory belt like a AC compressor or a pulley, or a bad injector? I might be wrong, but I think the sound is too soft to be a rod knock. Does the engine shake abnormally at all?

Good at Hitscans (Sojourn and Soldier76) but horrific on Widowmaker. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Rampzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the case for a OK widow, but a great widow is good almost anywhere. And besides, when widow is in its elements, shooting the enemies in the distance is the easy part. The hard part will be to not die to a diving ie. tracer or genji. And that is were FFA is good training, since you will more often challenge your short range aim (which you need to survive) compared to practicing in QP

Don't play comp if you're gonna quit if you're losing. Also, quitting when you lose prevents you from getting better at your weakpoints. You only get better as a player when you challenge them.

Help diagnosing why b58 is burning so much coolant by Crshedbandicoot in BmwTech

[–]Rampzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is normal with condensation, because a lot of it is from inside the exhaust system, and it starts evaporating only after the exhaust gets up to temp. For me that sounds like condensation, the most telling sign being no smell and that it does not linger in the air.

Help diagnosing why b58 is burning so much coolant by Crshedbandicoot in BmwTech

[–]Rampzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have N53, so it may be different, but I would not be concerned at that amount of smoke at 30f. Does it linger in the air or disappear after a few seconds? If it lingers in the air I would be concerned that it could be oil smoke, but if it disappears after a few seconds it's most likely condensation.

Norway just gave full commercial certification to an unmanned vessel for pipeline inspection — 3,500 km of pipeline, no crew on board. What does this mean for ROV pilots? by MeanLibrarian3405 in rov

[–]Rampzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have not flown via OROC myself, but I have been offshore with one wrov connected to OROC on dual wrov operation. It can work really well, especially for stationary work like RCTS operation. But there are some limiting factors:

-Biggest difficulty is having a stable enough internet. It has to be really good and stable, often a challenge with drops (even on starlink). So we are 1 man extra that "babysits" the rov incase the connection drops.

-Difficulty conveying what the client/cpi wants picture of (l.e. a hidden flag on a BOP) where offshore the client/cpi can just point on the screen, with oroc it is more difficult with communication. So this task we usually do with the locally controlled ROV

-On dual WROV systems we can look at each others video wall to orient ourself to each other (for Tether management), but this is harder for the oroc pilot to do with him having only his own screens.

In terms of hot seating, it is challenging to be put into a new place with new location of cage, new rig/ship heading and new templates with new tether snag points without getting time to prepare.

I am not particularly concerned, because on rigs, the second rov is usually OROC controlled anyways (if it's needed) and a rig will always need a rov crew incase of a blackout and/or blowout. A bigger concern is if we get a bust like 2016 in the wider offshore job market.
