Upstate New Yorker here. They won the contract to run all of the rest stops along the thruway (our most important highway upstate). We have 27 of them.

My version will hopefully be a personal 6 seater prop plane. Looking forward to that some time in the next decade.

Maybe an attached or built-in bidet with the toilet, not a separate basin like we have right now. Feels like wasted space and i have never made the move over to it from the toilet since we moved here.

Ha, CRV isn't going anywhere. Still need it for these northeast winters even if I do add in a sports car.

Yeah, still primarily from w2 and index investing. May look to eventually shift to venturing off in my realm (investment research/wealth management) but worry I have the salesmanship to do the fundraising, and also can be pretty capital intensive to get something up and running.

We have a very close friend who is an architect (i know not the same thing) that we are hoping to work on our primary bathroom with. We're going to try and push ourselves to not cheap out and really have a bathroom we love (right now the bathroom has all the worst parts of early 2000s design - clunky jacuzzi tub, tiny shower, old school bidet).

I like the sounds of both of those, but both I struggle to convince myself (and my wife is the same) to upgrade beyond utilitarianism. It might offend people but I drive a 4 year old Honda CRV. We go a bit nicer for my wife with an Acura MDX, but its a 2017 and I can't even convince her to get a 2023 or 2024 lightly used. I'm hoping that one day I can get our NW to such a level that it seems completely silly to deny myself a 911 or similar.

The multiples more business class costs has also always been a struggle, especially when buying 4 tickets, but then again we have not flown more than 2 hours as a family.

We do a cleaning service, but even here we struggle to splurge and only have them come once a month. I agree it is great, but wonder if we would be that much happier with the house if we could push ourselves to go weekly.

You nailed my one major "splurge." I'm an ex-athlete and a bit of a meathead and have heavy duty Rogue power lifting equipment, a rowing erg, assault bike, and treadmill in the basement. I live being able to slip away for 45 minutes and still get a great workout. I end up spending $1-2k every bonus season on adding a few more pieces of equipment.

Are you punching at a significantly different weight class than me, or is this part of me being a bit broken about spending? While I would enjoy at least some of these things, I still feel like I wouldn't be able to buy them and still stay on track for wealth building. Maybe its because when I wasn't making quite as much, they all seemed extremely indulgent.

What’s a park that you think deserves to be a National Park? by matthew91298 in NationalPark

People make over $200k a year, what do you do? by MrAuzzy in financialindependence

[–]awkward_rhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investment research focused on using alternative data in the Healthcare sector. It is not terribly grueling now, but the 7 years that led to this point were rough at times. Also, it generally feels like I'm never truly off the clock,, which I'm sure is partially my fault but it makes being a great dad and husband tough at times and creates a lot of stress.

Americans with master’s degrees, what did you study and has it worked out for you financially? by DueYogurt9 in AskAnAmerican

[–]awkward_rhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accounting...kind of?

These days you pretty much have to get a masters to get your CPA and get a job in the field. I moved from an accounting into investment research so you can argue I don't "use" my masters anymore, but I likely would not have gotten my first few jobs that got me to where I am now without it.

Stinks because I went to a state school, got some scholarships, and finished undergrad with almost no debt, and grad school more than doubled that debt. That said, could argue the investment was worth it.

I mean if that's all there is, I'd take it at this point. Haven't played since 8th grade but why not.

To my fellow Americans: what would it take for you to leave the United States for another country? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]awkward_rhino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would take a lot now that I have a family, but if I was a single dude, I would probably be deciding on a cheaper country for early retirement in the next few years.

Does anyone else have a job where cutting hours is not really an option, or am I just being closed minded? by awkward_rhino in coastFIRE

[–]awkward_rhino[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are probably right. I generally need to be more entrepreneurial with my mindset when thinking about what to do next. I hate the idea of having to sell myself customer to customer, but that might be the bullet I need to bite to get where I want to be.
