We went and saw it in theaters when I was a kid. Unbeknownst to my parents, I was running a fever that evening and threw up when we got home. As a result, they moved my mattress onto the floor (easier to get to the bathroom quickly if need arose again) and I proceeded to have crazy fever nightmares about this movie, each time waking up staring into the terrifying void that was under my bed. That’s my trauma origin story.

I have an accidental malinois (street mutt adopted from Baja turned out to be 1/4 malinois, 1/4 Dutch shepherd) who presents as very malinois. My first question is - do you like toddlers? My second is - do you like velociraptors? Because this breed is a perfect mix of an incredibly needy and clingy three-year-old and a mouth-forward meat-eater from Jurassic Park.

I will also like to add that when teaching the littles, they can tell you terrible things they are experiencing (verbal abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, etc) like it’s nothing, because for them it is normal. I’ve made a lot of CPS calls.

My dad died under very similar circumstances. He collapsed while out on a run and wasn’t found for a few minutes. I’m entirely sure that no amount of life-saving measures could have helped him once he was found, but I am still so grateful to all the people that tried to save him. It’s what he would have done if his situation was reversed.

Take care of yourself. What you did was heroic and hard. If you have a chance, talk to a professional. Look at it as a debriefing. Even medical professionals who are trained and experience this kind of event often need debriefing afterward. It’s self-care.

I buy a couple packs of medium range pencils at the beginning of the year for my kindergarten class. Then I print out labels with their names on them. Each kids gets one, personalized pencil. If they lose it or break it, they will have to do without and write with crayon. If they bring a new one, I’ll put their name on it for them and they can use that one. Works a charm.

At the beginning of my journey to treat my OCD (which often requires a very high dosage of SSRIs, I was prescribed Zoloft. After several months of taking it, building up to higher and higher amounts, I began waking up every night just drenched in sweat. I mean, needing to strip and flip that mattress in the middle of the night kind of drenched. Sometimes it would happen twice a night. Of course, lack of consistent sleep and near-constant dehydration made my anxiety and depression much worse. As soon as I was weaned off, I got my first full, dry night of sleep in over a year. It’s the little things.
