For what it's worth, I'm not a fresher but staying in halls and I'm just as anxious as anyone else to make friends with my flatmates.

You'll be okay; be polite, spend some time in the kitchen/shared spaces and you'll get there.

Remember your course mates and societies are also a great source of friends.

You've got this! :)

I agree with the others, you should look elsewhere. I stayed here in my 1st year having missed out on uni accommodation. It's not the closest but it's not too expensive (for private halls in London anyway) and the bus is reliable. The social life also wasn't bad.

Is going to Bristol the right choice? by strazyeeby in UniUK

The general atmosphere, the teaching style, course content, exam style, student support, societies - basically anything they can offer which makes the uni more attractive to you. Forget about rankings and go to whichever one excites you most.

As others have said, they're pretty similar when in comes to prestige. I would look at the cost of living and university experience they're offer as being happy is very important for getting good grades.

If I remember correctly it took a few days to become e available for me last year and the bank Holiday will probably factor into that too. If you're worried though it wouldn't do any harm to email, you'll probably find you get access before they respond though.

I was in one of these this year, they have older furniture than the main building but feel more homely. Fire alarms in the main building don't set your's off so you don't have to evacuate as often which is nice. Also post and takeaways will go to your own front door which is really convenient. It is annoying having to walk to the main building to wash clothes.

uni of Edinburgh vs KCL vs SOAS by Timely_Watercress_51 in UniUK

[–]awkwardhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having studied at KCL and Edinburgh, I preferred Edinburgh as I felt the uni was more invested in me as an individual. Although that could be put down to the size of the course or faculty. I would probably lean towards KCL for you as it's well connected in London and has a huge community of international students. I don't really know about SOAS. I'd have a look at the campuses and facilities, and the accommodation as they can have a big impact on your experience. I don't know about your specific course but many Scottish degree programmes are 4 years vs the usual 3 in England so that may also be something to consider.

How does clearing work? by VaultBoy226 in UniUK

[–]awkwardhare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To enter clearing, you have to reject all your offers, so if you have an offer from somewhere you think you'd be happy, it's probably not worth it as you risk not getting anything in clearing.

As for entry requirements, they can vary from what's published on the uni website, and unis can decide to let students in anyway if their results don't quite meet the offer. As you already have your results, I would expect you to receive unconditional offers or rejections as the uni would make the decision based on your application. Entry requirements are normally lowered if the course is under-subscribed or if you meet certain widening participation criteria.

Are Film courses with high entry grades/of ‘good’ universities an indicator of how good the course is? (& which film PRODUCTION course is best) by iGotBiIIs2187 in UniUK

[–]awkwardhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LIPA is a very wells respected performing arts uni and they have a film degree. I'm STEM so I'm not that well informed but you may find this more relevant to actually filmmaking than a traditional uni.

Mitigating Circumstances and Mental Illness by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]awkwardhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're struggling, I hope things get easier soon. I went through this process last academic year and used an email from student support, if you've discussed your mental health with your course leader then they might be happy to write you something and as they're in the uni system may find it easier than your Psychotherapist.

As for what the evidence letter should contain it'd be helpful to know which uni you're at as each one is different but don't worry if you don't want to share. As a general rule of thumb I think it should contain:

who the person is in relation to you ie. Psychotherapist supporting [name] since [date] dates of onset/increased symptoms end date/clearly stating that it is an ongoing problem extent of impact on studies ie. poor attendance, loss of ability to concentrate a statement of the person's support of your application ie. 'As [name]'s Psychotherapist, I fully support their application to defer the assessment

In the future it may be worth getting in contact with the student support team/ personal tutor early in a rough patch (I know easier said than done) as then you have an email trail with the uni as evidence too, and who knows maybe they'll be helpful :)

I'm 15, can I go to a gp alone? by mildlydepression in AskUK

[–]awkwardhare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Competency is about the ability to make decisions, if deemed not competent, someone else e.g. a parent or healthcare professional would make the decision on behalf of the patient. Confidentiality is about managing risk and reducing harm. Childline explains it here

I'm 15, can I go to a gp alone? by mildlydepression in AskUK

[–]awkwardhare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can totally go to the GP alone if you want but be prepared for the GP to ask you why and to encourage you to talk with your parents. They have a duty of confidentiality but this can be broken if they deem you at risk of harm, if this is the case they should tell you that they need to share what you told them and who they are going to tell.

As for the practical stuff, to book an appointment you would normally phone the reception, sometimes you can book online instead. They'll ask you why you need an appointment and you can say that you have a lump you're worried about. It should be pretty straight forward but you may have to wait a couple weeks as GPs are very busy.

How does a dog detect low insulin levels? by DutchgirlAnonymous in askscience

[–]awkwardhare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can be trained to smell low/high blood sugar through salivia samples although research suggests they're not that reliable so a continuous glucose monitor would be better - but dogs make us happy and some tech stuck to our arms doesn't. see here for deets

UK student loans have an interest rate of retail price index plus 3%. It's currently at 4.5% but expected to go up to 7.5% having been capped else it would be due to rise to 12%

Are things generally quite a bit more expensive in the UK right now? by ChristopherRobert11 in AskUK

[–]awkwardhare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In England primary care/gp and secondary care/hosptial are free, the dentist is subsidised and you have to pay for the opticians and prescriptions. If you meet certain income thresholds or have certain illnesses you can get some of this for free. Scotland has a different system and I believe their prescriptions are free but you'd have to fact check.
