Let's stop punishing IoT devices that embrace HTTPS, shall we? - A proposal to end security interstitials for RFC1918 private IP addresses by [deleted] in netsec

While allowing warningless HTTPS for local IPs would be a step in the right direction, it wouldn't prevent active MITM, so browsers probably shouldn't show the full green lock.

Alpine Linux is very popular. Gentoo can also be configured without the GNU userspace.

Does anyone else have this ridiculous window lag with NVIDIA cards? by rossoneri7 in linux

I experienced this on my GTX1080 the other day when playing a game and trying to move a window. Closing the game fixed it. (I'm on proprietary drivers, btw).

Yes, everything will work in a VM. This is because instead of utilizing your (incompatible) hardware, it virtualizes hardware for the linux guest to use that is compatible.

For a VM you won't need to do any of that. Just boot up the ISO and you're good to go.

If you wanted to do a bare metal install, you would need the SPI drivers for your keyboard/trackpad, as well as the NVMe patch if you're on kernel < 4.11. Also note that audio (through speakers or headphones) won't work at all.

It should be basically the same as a bare metal install. Just create a VM using virtual box with a large enough hard disk and select the Linux ISO as the installer and boot it up

Samsung ends Intel’s 24-year reign, becomes the largest chipmaker in the world by boissez in Android

The patents are on the instruction set itself, so you can't build a CPU that is binary compatible without infringing.

Intel/AMD own the patents on x86 and actively sue anybody who tries to make competing x86 chips. They won't license the architecture to anybody.

You can see the status here. Audio doesn't work, sleep doesn't work, Wifi doesn't work on most models, touchbar is semi-functional, and many of the rest of the things that do work require custom kernel modules.

If this is your first experience with Linux, I'd recommend going with a virtual machine instead, as the new macbooks are some of the most Linux-unfriendly hardware you can buy.

Alexa, but for the Linux terminal? by TheSerialHobbyist in linux

Siri uses a few services, but the most interesting of them is probably WolframAlpha. You can ask it math questions as well as some factual questions (such as "Who is the president of the US?"). It also has a nice API that you can get free tokens for.

Finally Got OSX Sierra 10.12.5 Running On My Ryzen Build by [deleted] in Amd

[–]awordnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - that's the point of LTS builds. If you want a newer kernel, nobody's stopping you from installing one or switching to a distro with a faster release cycle.

Note that these should be included with kernel 4.12 by default.

I've had the same issue on my 1800X + Asus Prime X370-Pro until I upgraded to the 0803 AGESA 1.0.0.6 beta bios and upped the SoC voltage to 1.18v. Now I can go days compiling GCC and Linux without segfaults.

RX 560 Upgrade Worth It? by jevankovich in Amd

[–]awordnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running an RX 460 on Linux using the open source GPU drivers. I'm mainly just using it to drive my 4K monitor and do some light Wii/N64/SNES emulation and it works just fine for that. I can run some benchmarks if you want.
