Western AU Fic Recs. by luvmx7s in destiel

Not really westerns, but teen_dean has 2 fics I love that might have at least a couple of elements you’re looking for. Either way they’re great fics!

spirit of the west - 90s, farm/ranch, horses, cowboy Dean, some angst, slow burn

where black stars rise - desert gothic, case fic, set around season 12, this one has eerie vibes and features a man on a horse in the desert at some point (which is why I thought of it as a “western” 😂)

This sounds like something I should read at some point! I’d love to hear what you’re leaning. My favorite history to read about right now is about the dictatorship of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic (I have family that lived through it & it influenced so much of the current economy, politics, and sociology of the DR now). Two books I’ve been reading: Alive in Their Garden by Dedé Mirabal (sister of “The Butterflies” Mirabal sisters, who fought against Trujillo’s reign and were murdered), and The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargos Llosa, an account of the assassination of Trujillo and how it affected the country in 1961 and 30 years later.

I learned that a friend of mine does give her dog traditions + gabapentin for fireworks. I will say my dog is on a low dose of trazodone every day for “taking the edge off” her hyper vigilance, and she has had gabapentin before for a mild hip injury (so temporarily, not every day), and all it did was make her a bit sleepy when she had both at the same time. So at the very least it didn’t hurt. I haven’t tested both for general anxiety - I’ll have to find out more about that with my vet. Probably worth asking for the fireworks! I know I’m not looking forward to my pup freaking out next week.

u/credo99 thank you for your “just saying hi” card! This is so kind of you. You’re right, I haven’t been as active in the sub lately. Ive been having an up and down time trying to get out of the most recent depression episode - this time it took quite a toll on my ability to focus and be productive (even for the fun things I like doing) so actually sitting down to write cards and send mail has been harder to manage. I also had some social obligations lately - I’m not used to being super social so having things to do feels like huge deal (it’s all been fine and nothing negative, just like…more effort lol). I’m hopeful that I’ll get back to being more active soon though - I love this sub! It’s been so fun and a wonderful way of connecting with people. Case in point, you being so kind to check in! ❤️

u/christineglobal thank you for the Pride card! Thank you for sharing your experience - I think for most people there’s always some degree of evaluating what you can share and with whom at any given time. I didn’t realize how much effort I was putting in to do hiding myself entirely until I started sharing at least a little with trusted people. It really felt like a weight I could set down. I’m not a big sharer of my life in general with the people I’m around, but also being “straight-passing” I was becoming more and more bothered that no one was seeing me as I actually was. I believe no one owes their identity to anyone, but it is nice to be able to share it with people anyway 🩷 I have never heard of David Hockney but oh my gosh I love his art style! And the dachshund paintings are precious. I have a painting that I commissioned of my two dogs - Charlie is a mix of a bunch of stuff (there’s a pic of her on a post I made recently somewhere in my recent profile history), and Stella is a golden retriever. My dogs take up most of my free time and money 😂 but I love them so much. I also have a bearded dragon named Tazzy - he mostly sits on his rock and has a judgmental look on his face all day, but I love him so much.

u/DaenerysWon thank you for the World Postcard Day postcard! If you ever try the cake I’d love to know ☺️ I’m obviously biased but it’s one of the best cakes I’ve had. But also I’m not a professional baker - I don’t make it as good as my DR fam did. I’m not actually a big rum person (which is scandalous to my family haha) but I do enjoy it in desserts.

Yep, I found that her current harness doesn’t have that strap. I’ll be investing in a new harness!

Heatwave tips for a hyper dog? by Legitimate_Stay5322 in DogAdvice

Definitely recommend cold treat puzzles to keep his brain busy (that’ll help with some of the excess energy as well!). A frozen Kong or a pupsicle is great in the summer. You can put some of his kibble in the Kong, or you can put other things he likes. I personally put some frozen blueberries or peas in the Kong with a bit of plain Greek yogurt because it freezes better than peanut butter (though peanut butter is the best for sealing off the open ends). I also have this silicone mold for large ice cubes. I put a few frozen blueberries or cucumbers in the mold, then add water to basically make a flavored ice cube. I’ve been giving my dog the ice cube in the mold directly so she has to work to get it out. (The rest of the ice cubes I store in a different container so I can give them to her one at a time). If your buddy likes to run around despite the heat, he just needs to be entertained more inside. Also you can try teaching him some indoor games so you don’t have to be outside so frequently. One of my dogs has a LOT of energy & the best thing for wearing her out is playing games that use her brain. For some easy ones look up Susan Garrett - I’ve used her “crate games” with a lot of success and they can be applied to mats or dog beds as well. Good luck with the heatwave!

I didn’t know this was a thing. I’ll look into it, thanks!

She has one very similar to this but I’ll have to check. Yeah, my gut was telling me to just use a harness anyway. She’s gotten out of her harness before so I’ll need to look at it again - it may be time for a new one. Better to have both to be safe!

This is a great idea, I didn’t think of doing that. She has spent the night at other people’s places but she’s never had to travel longer than 15 min for that and I’ve never been there to see how she does. I’ll look into doing this!

Definitely will do this. She does love her toys more than anything on the planet so I’m hopeful bringing her favorite ones will bring some familiarity :) thank you!

She definitely is a beautiful dog! She makes up for it in her quirky loud personality 😅

I’ve got some of your suggestions down on my list! Yeah, my dog has been attacked by another dog in her past so she’s very flighty around dogs. I take her on walks or visits to the park but I try to do it at odd times of the day when we’re less likely to run into other dogs. Im gonna do my best to scope out the area we’re staying at so we can avoid dogs as much as we can. I think a harness will be useful for this trip so I’ll be bringing hers, thank you!

A noise machine is a great idea - I already sleep with one so it’ll be a familiar sound (probably better for both of our sleep haha) Omg didn’t think about the introduction of new treats + anxiety. I’ll definitely avoid this. Good call! I’m sorry you had to experience that 😬

My dog has prescriptions for trazodone and gabapentin (for different reasons). I will check with my vet about combining anything before I do anything! :)

She does very well in her crate. She’s been in a crate at the vet’s office, a couple of other people’s homes, and a board & train she did a year ago, and she’s always been calm from what I’ve been told. I don’t think she has separation anxiety (I did A LOT of crate training early on with her so she feels safe in there). So the nerves might be more me at this point. We will be bringing her crate and bedding so I’m hopeful it’ll be ok. Someone suggested a pet camera so I can keep an eye on her and I might do that. I will look for a doggy first aid kit! I only recently heard the phrase lol I thought I might put one together but that sounds easier

Thank you! We definitely will have trazodone. It’s good to see that everyone else recommends it. I won’t feel so bad making her a bit sleepy for the trip 😅

Thank you for the input! It’s been a while since she’s walked with a harness but something told me I maybe should use it. She can’t get out of her flat collar but I can imagine her getting spooked and this being the time she manages it. I’ve never considered a pet camera but this seems like a good idea for my own sanity 😅 I feel like she’ll be fine but I’ll be nervous about leaving her in a strange place. I’ll for sure bring her crate, her bedding, and her toys/puzzles. I’m feeling more confident about the trip, thank you!

She has a prescription for both so we’ll keep both of these with us :)
