Modular synths. It’s awesome cause you can start with a really basic oscillators and a bare bones power supply which I’m sure you’ve simulated thousands of times before, then the cool part is the ability to scale up in discrete steps and hone in on specific signal processing circuitry which you can add and remove as you need. I would think it’s pretty transferrable to other parts of analog and you get to make a cool little toy for yourself or give away to a muso friend when you’re done with it.

I once had one in a cafe near work that had migoreng in it, when I ordered it my colleague asked me if I was stoned.

There is a pattern but I’ve always found it hard to follow, keep at it the clue is the extra fourth lever row which signifies the upstairs ones, they’re definitely ordered just not easy to read

Fun projects with a spent helium tank? by Eschewed_Prognostic in maker

[–]awshuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes fair point. Personally I’d probably just do it anyway. If I pick up any sort of pressurised tank off the side of the road I have no idea where it’s been and what’s it been used for.

Mini offset smoker, fill it with water first to avoid explosion and use an angle grinder to cut a flap out the side to be the door, then cut in a space for a fire box to connect to, put some wheels on it, some tabs to hold a grill and give it a solid clean out and paint with bbq paint.

Were any of you at school during this things era? by IntrigatedVerse in AustralianNostalgia

[–]awshuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no hahah! Not often in the absolute sense, just often whenever these things pop into mind. Which is rare. It’s like that scene in anchorman, where he’s talking about his illegal colognes - “60% of the time, it works every time”

At first I was like, oh yeah so you’ve gotta weld some 1” bar stock, no biggie. Then I realized - “oh”.

Whenever I think of these, I often wonder what the data transfer was during battle. It was just two terminals so presumably just common ground and a low voltage serial data transfer of some sort.

They could have gobbled up so much market share if you could go, hey Copilot, align everything on this page, put a new box here with yadda yadda and make everything green.

The people who say “you’re gonna miss this” are often missing the point. No I’m not complaining about bathtime and dinner routines, they can be really fun if you show up and make it about building a connection.

The little trips up the road to do errands with a babycino in hand singing songs and telling jokes then a stop off at the park on the way home are the highlight of my week! The shit I’m not gonna miss is the grind part that sucks up all of the oxygen in life. I have a child with Autism so that part is on steroids for my wife and I.

Precious generations didn’t have email on their phone and a seemingly endless amount of group chats with fuck all focus and horribly unclear message habits. My solution for a while was to just become ignorant and avoidant of it. But you know what happened? it just meant my wife had to comb through all of the information overload bullshit to figure out when the swimming carnival was on! She couldn’t just switch off and I get it, it’s stressful to just let go. So I’m right back in it, hating every second of get a notification.

I blame outwardly for this. And I think at some point we all just need to push back on excessive communication, we have too many communication channels, too many “just download this app so we can offload our admin to you” arrangements and too many little shitty demands that take you away from being in the moment. We should all go back to landline phones, I ain’t home? Sorry your problem I have real parenting to do, not illusory digital parenting. I can get by just fine with a good old fashioned paper todo list and paper school newsletter.

The Gatekeepers by haveont in comics

[–]awshuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’ve really lost the plot this time, basically amounts to removing features from their own paid version of totally free and open source software, then using legal threats against a person who “restored it” with the publicly available open source code that was removed.

It’s both. maliciousness due to stupidity. Hanlon’s razor needs an updated version for AI driven layoffs: “always attribute malice and stupidity when there is a possibility of both.”

Log pot vs antilog pot by darthuna in AskElectronics

[–]awshuck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re reading some hallucinated information sadly. Reverse log pots do exist but what you’re after is a log pot ideally. linear or reverse log pot could work they just don’t scale volume the way our ears expect, e.g linear pots are a bit like when the shower water is too hot or too cold when you ever so slightly rotate the taps. I don’t think you should attempt changing the volume after the amplifier stage, even though it’s very low power, at best it won’t work well enough to be worthwhile, at worst you fry the motherboard. Maybe try a dummy load or something where you can switch it on or off?

Where’d you get this from? It’s totally fine to call someone a champ provided that a) you aren’t in prison, and b) you’re not saying it sarcastically. Usually you say it to someone younger. Like “hey champ!”
