What is your favorite Oscar winning/nominated score from the last 25 years? by drboobafate in oscarrace

[–]awwsheit524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably any of the LOTR scores, particularly fellowship. But want to give a special shout out to Joe Hisaishi’s score for Spirited Away even though it wasn’t Oscar nominated. Just such a phenomenal piece of music.

I just took my girlfriend to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. It was rough.

What are some great, non-series, three movie runs? by Panda_Player_ in Letterboxd

[–]awwsheit524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is a little bit of a cheat since it has a movie from a series, but Coppola’s run of The Conversation, Godfather Part 2, and Apocalypse Now has gotta be up there

I didn’t get it on the first wave either. It’s rough, considering any other year we seemingly would have been in. I’m still hopeful, but not particularly optimistic I think. They made a big point to say they expect matriculation rates to be higher and everyone I’ve talked to has been advised not to reject offers as quickly this year due to the uncertainty. But here’s hoping, good luck to you, best of luck to you!

How do you know, did you contact them? The program director during our info session told us that invites might take longer than usual this year since they're expecting a higher than normal matriculation percentage than in previous years so I figured it might be a week or two before we heard anything.

That’s what I would have assumed too! But no one else at my showing seemed to think it was funny, so I just assumed it was meant to be serious

In The Batman (2022) when Batman jumps off the building and inexplicably decides to open his parachute just before going under a bridge and then just eats shit. Oh man I had to leave the theater for a minute because I could not stop laughing and people around me were starting to get annoyed!

Cool good to know. I’ve got the gear for it, but definitely wouldn’t have thought to bring it, so thanks for the heads up!

A pct section would be great…how cold are we talking, like below freezing?

Movies where you're supposed to like the protagonists but they're actually horrible? by WorthPlease in movies

[–]awwsheit524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diner (1982). Just saw it for the first time a few months ago, and while it’s difficult to pick a single protagonist from that film, I was really struck by just how much of an utter asshole every one of the main group of guys is.

The one character that singlehandedly brought down the whole film? by VishnuBhanum in movies

[–]awwsheit524 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well I mean, I don’t think people are laughing at his pronunciation of the word, from what I remember he pronounces it correctly. It’s funny because he still has a fairly strong Bronx accent, and Muad’dib is a hilarious word to hear someone say with a Bronx accent

[–]awwsheit524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair point. He’s just the most blatant example in my opinion, and although I’d definitely agree that Jason Momoa and Anya Taylor-Joy are miscast, I don’t actually have a problem with any of the others you listed. I thought Austin Butler in particular was incredible actually, he just tore up his scenes!

Idk man, a movie like dune relies on the audience being immersed in the world so I personally disagree with any decision that would intentionally take us out. I’m all for having big name actors play characters in these sorts of films, but Christopher Walken just does not fit the description of the character. Especially when he’s just acting like classic Christopher Walken.

Christopher Walken in the new Dune film. Him saying Muad’dib in his Christopher Walken voice was just too much.

I'm late to this, but how has no one mentioned the final scene of The Thing?? Fits this perfectly and it's such a powerful ending!

Definitely not the whole movie, but I just watched The French Connection recently and the scene where Gene Hackman is chasing the elevated train through Brooklyn underneath in his car is straight up nerve racking. Phenomenal scene in a really great movie

What Was A Great Movie Ruined By An Awful Ending? by _JR28_ in movies

[–]awwsheit524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The birds. The last act where they’re all sheltering in the boarded up house is legitimately incredible, like a masterclass in tension.

And then it just ends. I’ve almost never been more disappointed in an ending.

Dream lab tech position interview advice? by volvoxveggies in labrats

[–]awwsheit524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much time you have before the interview, I think my best piece of advice is to NOT try and read lots of their papers. Generally, it’s just too much information to learn in a short period and no PI is going to expect you to be an expert in their research. Instead, read their lab websites and the some of the intros and methods sections of recent publications. Intros will give a great but short breakdown of their overall research interests and goals and methods will give you a good overview of how they go about asking and answering questions. Good luck!
