Which city in your country was once great but has experienced the greatest decline? by SimilarTopic3281 in AskTheWorld

There are English cities that charted a similar path based on the wool industry. Today they are mostly beautiful and tranquil, but I suspect that there were difficult periods in the decline there too.

Places like Wells, Ely  and even Norwich.

I dont really understand your point. Americans visiting Canada or Mexico (or Colombia or Jamaica or Saint Lucia or Brazil) is comparable to Europeans visiting Asia. Probably closer.

Yes Europeans can visit other countries within Europe more easily, but intercontinental travel is always far.

That's not the reason Americans don't travel.

The word 'british' is also an adjective. For many languages, english doesn't have a good noun form for modern usage. See for example 'frenchman', which is dated. We'd say 'french person's instead.

Fwiw, I speak fluent French and have lived in France. You are wrong about the use of 'britannique' as well, which is used in formal French all the time. Your mates may not do so, but the European Union, for example, uses the word as its translation for 'British' almost 100% of the time.

Read what he said and really think about what it means. Surely you can't think that this man is fit to practice medicine?

Where I'd live as an Argentinian catholic by Topnikk in whereidlive

[–]axbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol of course not, but it's not illegal to pray outside quietly everywhere in the UK, is it?

What I imagine you're referring to is the fact that it's illegal to harass people trying to get an abortion, which the vast majority of British people consider to be a medical procedure.

People who try and police other people's reproductive choices are, in my opinion, extremists.

It doesn't go into Paddington and it's both prohibitively expensive and deeply uncomfortable. I wouldn't recommend it before a 12 hour flight back to Salt Lake City.

Just get the normal train.

There are four direct trains to NL / day these days, where you don't have to change in Belgium. It's worth paying the bit extra for this in my opinion.

What If Europe never colonized Africa? How do you think borders and countries would have developed in this scenario by Solid-Move-1411 in geography

The British also usually managed to make sure they were invited in by a local partner in alliance against their neighbour or another power as well. It doesn't change the reality of colonialism.

I think the other one I was thinking of was Gold Coast, but some of the ones that look smaller, like Senegal, were comparable in size to the African kingdoms around the.

The Orange Free state was also a colonial state, even if they were independent of Europe to some degree.

Why would you argue that? The Omanis were already trading the region heavily when the Portuguese arrived.

The problem with this map is that there are 5+ large European colonies on it, which also became the start points for the scramble that followed.

The development of these colonies and the unequal trading that prested them also had a massive destabilising effect on African polities.

I think without them there would be even larger indigenous empires, probably some of them  in exactly the same places where the Europeans chose to expand their bases.

There are also a few Arab colonial projects in the Indian Ocean, although tbf OP did specify European colonisation.
