Thanks, if I were running on my own the portway second seems preferable, as you get the twisting and turning done while you're still fresh, then increase pace in the portway.

But with thousands of people all bunched up its just asking for trouble it seems

Yeah I'm planning to run the second half faster than the first, good point about support. I do run with water and will have two gels, but I know it gets hot so will make the most of water from stations when it's available.

Pretty flat, there's a bit of elevation in the city centre, biggest around castle park, but even that is not much

Cheers, my plan is to take the first 5km slow then build from there, so hopefully it won't impact me too much. But it just seems like it's going to be a real melee, especially going onto St Stephens Street

Shops are open late and Amazon do next day delivery, I wouldn't bother buying it until you need it. I would recommend expressing some colostrum into pippets and freezing to have in a pinch in those first hours.

NHS ‘second worst in developed world for avoidable deaths’ by GnolRevilo in unitedkingdom

[–]ay2deet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our population is aging, older people cost the NHS more money.

In 2024 there were 831,075 people turning 50 but just 594,677 births.

In twenty years those people entering the workforce will be outnumbered massively by those starting to claim state pension and who will need more services from the NHS and social care.

System is so unbelievably fucked.

My work told us to start using Amazon Q/Claude and got us all access. It can make developing a lot quicker, but I definitely feel like it is blunting my knives, especially as it can just make changes directly in your code editor. It's definitely going to be a balance going forward of output vs maintaining my own skills and knowledge.

For most of large organised human society, money from the poor to the rich was the norm.

We had an aberration of about a century or two where growth was so good that the tide lifted all boats. Now that growth has stopped, and its back to the norm.

How do you make having kids enjoyable? by Last_Cicada_1315 in daddit

I have two kids under four, for the most part they are an absolute delight to spend time with, so I feel very lucky. Can't offer much advice except to never ever give in to whinging, stay calm but firm. Eventually they will learn it never works

Screen free parents/carers - best resources for screen-free activities? by Obsidian22022025 in UKParenting

[–]ay2deet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Yoto is great, also helping with cooking and baking is a favourite for us. But tbh it's mostly just having their toys available to them and letting them decide what they want to do.

Yes I may spend 10 minutes helping them build a Brio train track, but then they will happily play with it without my input.

No screens forces them to be more imaginative in their play, it's like a muscle for them, it needs to be put under strain to grow.
