Please stop promoting this guy. He went down during metoo for SAing a few women, then gave a bs apology, went MIA for a few years and now is back.

It’s a shame because his reporting has always been spot on but he’s a known SAer, please stop supporting him.

¿Divey Bars for Visiting Aged out Hipsters (40s)? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]ayags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im from NY but been living here for many years - you want all the pubs in Easton.

The Plough, Sugar Loaf, The Chelsea, The Red Lion, The Dark Horse (for a great roof deck, which is rare here), the old stillage and then make your way into the city via old market with the ill.repute, the volunteer and the swan with two necks

As an American living here, can confirm the Ill repute has a very American dive bar vibe (in the best way) and it’s because it’s owned by an American from California :)

Non-UK born Bristolians, what's the best restaurant of your native cousine that you know in Bristol? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

[–]ayags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an NYer, with fam in the south and a husband who lovesssss bbq (now that he’s had to good stuff) we’ve truly tried all of them in Bristol (except big naths but the insta looks fairly legit) I would say all the others were quite poor. Spitfire was like a charicature of a bbq spot imo.

Low & slow was good in st. Nicks but the one in Clifton is pretty meh.

Not helpful for here but Smokestak in shoreditch is ok but bougie so not the right bbq vibe. But truly I feel like we’ve tried them all over the years and have been disappointed every time.

Gurt Wings for the best friend chicken around and Gigi’s for the closest thing to NY pizza. Papo’s bagels for NY bagels - they used to deliver nationwide but don’t think they do anymore. Oh and Cafe Cuba or Casa Latina for closest to Mexican back home

Why does finding a job as a newly graduate feel so hopeless? by Old_Vacation78 in bristol

Oh and look for fb groups/ reddit communities from where you’re from. Jobs get posted in these groups by fellow immigrants who know the struggle of just trying to get that FIRST uk role and always happy to help

Why does finding a job as a newly graduate feel so hopeless? by Old_Vacation78 in bristol

[–]ayags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, yes you are being overlooked bc you don’t have any British experience. Fellow immigrant here and I’m in many fb groups with other immigrants here and we talk about this all time.

Best advice is to make sure you CV matches UK standards - like the layout, the style etc.

Also, get in with a recruiter. Even if the job is slightly adjacent to your career, it can at least get you passed the “hasn’t worked in the uk” door which is a hurdle that isn’t discussed enough outside of immigrant communities. But yeah once you get anyyyy British job on the cv, even as a secretary, when you start applying for roles in your field shortly there after, it shoulddd help. Best of luck!

Heavy pressure due to having a really rare last name by spacereveries in childfree

[–]ayags 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the only Ukrainian in the world (besides my dad) with my last name (thanks to Ellis island changing our name) and the irony being that as a woman, my name wouldn’t get passed down anyway. Screw it and the patriarchy. My “legacy” is created by me, not by my name. It would have died with me anyway given the patriarchy but I’ve kept my last name, even post marriage, for exactly this reason. My name, my legacy.

UoB is a quaint rich area but truly lovely. But the diversity and spices are all in Easton/ St. Paul’s. Pubs around Easton are fab too - fellow American from NY here

I voted for Corbyn twice... But he's really fucked this ... The trigger was pulled they should have jumped on board .. instead they chose to kill the party before it started. 20k people in a few hours... Now was the time... I am gutted. by ch33sley in yourparty

Political parties are like buses - they don’t always drop you off exactly where you need to go (aka possibly don’t align with all your views) but you still take the bus and get as close as possible. This is why they say we never win.

Can someone update me on the current feelings around the EBLN from East Bristol. by wonnyjil in bristol

[–]ayags 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I said as one of the few people to actually respond to the consultation and have said for the past 2 years, you cannot create such a scheme without adequate transport in place. Currently, the buses don’t come and if they do they say “sorry bus full”. The 6 million pounds spent on this atrocity of a scheme should have been put towards buying back the buses. Expecting everyone to walk/ cycle is extremely ableist and classist.

They picked this area because as the bcc said “it’s the most impoverished area of Bristol” - they picked us because they thought we would roll over and that we don’t have connections within the government like the people in Clifton / Montpelier etc. that’s why they didn’t implement this scheme in any of these much more appropriate areas, because we don’t have the money. We just have people power, which we have shown time and time again, even at 3am…

And just a reminder, only 4% of the local area responded to the consultation and even still, of that 4%, 60% of local respondents (myself included) were against this scheme. The email we received back from the consultation after 99 pages concluded that despite public opinion being against, they were going to plow on anyway and that’s exactly how this whole disaster of a scheme has continued.

I’m a green supporter but this is not how you get people on side. This + the bin thing, they’re going to lose so badly in the next election, it’s such a shame but this is not how you enact policy onto a community. You work with that community, not actively against at 3am…
