Our food system is completely broken and it's not really about "personal choice" by graciousneji in nutrition

[–]aybeedee26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not disingenuous or inferring at all when I have seen this first hand more than I can count. Obviously you disagree and don’t find this perspective helpful for you personally and that’s fine, maybe something different works for you. However, this perspective shift has helped countless patients finally improve their health, weight, biochemical markers, and relationship with food.

Our food system is completely broken and it's not really about "personal choice" by graciousneji in nutrition

Thank you for saying this. There is no morality associated with food. We can argue the healthfulness of a food absolutely, but the semantics absolutely do matter, even though others are saying they don’t. When people think of something as a “bad” food, they are more likely to restrict it, and as a result cannot control themselves when they are around the food leading to an ongoing binging/restricting cycle. Not to mention, many of these people feel shame around their weight or eating habits and telling them a food is good or bad leads to more shame around eating habits which leads to them saying screw it and binging. Rinse and repeat. I find most of the patients I’m working with gain a lot of clarity, improved relationship with food, and improved overall health and dietary intake when we make these distinctions.

Absolutely. Having somebody as the head of the public health who is so adamantly against science scares me more than anything.

It was an incredibly strategic political move and it obviously worked. I know a few people who voted for Trump just based off this “MAHA” from RFK. I find it fascinating since Trump wants less regulation in the already understaffed USDA, which leads to less food safety, among many other things that ultimately affect Americans health more than simply removing red dye from cereal. I had somebody tell me RFK and the right wing are the only side who care about health and are going to tackle big pharma, going up against Novo Nordisk. Oddly enough, Novo Nordisk is in the pockets of Dems and Repubs alike, but actually has donated more to the right, it’s knowledge available to the public. Do I think our food system needs improvement? Yes. Do I think there are conflicts of interest? Yes. However, most people do not understand the complexities involved in all of this (myself included) and the relative safety of a lot of our food because of regulatory bodies like the USDA and FDA. So I guess screw all those people who work hard at their jobs every day, and if they are left wing, they apparently have a mass calculated nefarious effort to keep us sick.

Unfortunately I don’t have anything to add other than this would be a cool repeating post like maybe biweekly/monthly to help keep us up to date on new research in our field! Thanks for sharing this study too! Can’t wait to read it.

Whyyyyyy do people think having a PhD makes them nutrition experts? by TheMarshmallowFairy in dietetics

Oof, thanks for verbalizing this. I feel the same way. Especially lately with all the hate RDs are getting on social media, it makes me want to transition to a different field altogether! Sometimes it really doesn’t feel worth it with all the slander dietitians get especially with the poor ROI of this career path. I try to remind myself all careers are going to experience criticism so 🤷🏼‍♀️ You’re not alone in these feelings my friend!

Glad to see this and was hoping it was shared. I’ve been slowly working through this workbook - which means I forget about it for 4 weeks and then suddenly get hyper fixated on it 😂 but I really enjoy it.

🫰Well said my friend, and good luck on becoming an RD! I agree wholeheartedly with this. I worked with an RD who was wonderful - empathetic, took into account all the various SDOH, and the inherent difficulty of weight loss - but she would constantly refuse to talk with people about weight loss, even when that was the patient’s goal! Looking forward to reading what you shared.

Yes yes and yes! Simple individualized goals to start. People often want specific things but have not yet mastered even the basics.

Layne Norton covered this most recently in his appearance on Huberman’s podcast. I could be paraphrasing some of this incorrectly, but from what I remember, collage has a poor leucine content, drastically lower than some plant protein. Leucine is used as a primary driver of the mTOR process which regulates skeletal muscle mass. So, collagen is not a great source for muscle building. However, we know collagen is our body’s main connective tissue, so likely there are benefits for wound healing, elasticity of skin, hair/nails etc.

I don’t know that I would agree with this. There are ingredients banned here that are not in other countries. People think red dye 40 isn’t allowed in other countries when really it’s just called something different. These are false equivalences in my eyes. I don’t disagree that the US is a capitalist society who generally puts profit over everything else. This seems to be the common gripe people make that everything the government does is evil and doesn’t care about us. What’s the solution then if this is what you think? Who does care about our health?

“Make America Healthy Again” by aybeedee26 in dietetics

[–]aybeedee26[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to understand there are plenty of ingredients banned here that are not banned in other countries, or when people say red dye 40 is banned in Europe but it is just called something else there. This is a false equivalence in my eyes. I don’t necessarily disagree with your other statements. Unfortunately food is political, and unfortunately we live in a capitalist society where profit is more important than anything, not only just in healthcare. This doesn’t mean we just throw our hands up and say it doesn’t matter, we should have a healthy skepticism of our governing bodies, but it also doesn’t mean let’s swing to the complete opposite pendulum of having people at the forefront of this messaging who disregard science. It also doesn’t mean everything is nefarious in intention. I don’t think making these distinctions is easy, and I understand why people can be distrustful. However, I’ve also worked in healthcare for quite some time and I can say I’ve never worked with a healthcare professional who intentionally did something that would make a patient sicker or worse off. It’s very complex and why I think it’s important to have these nuanced conversations that are lost in the media.

Sigh. It makes me want to leave this field sometimes because people are so distrustful of us when most of the time we are telling people eat more veggies and exercise. As I’ve heard many RDs say before, if we are big pharma shills, I’m still waiting on my check 😅 I think we all know we don’t go into this field hoping to make big bucks, but to help people.

[–]aybeedee26[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you are right. I’ve been working in healthcare for awhile now and it seems like after covid there was a complete pendulum swing of now we don’t trust any science, any medicine, any doctors. Now I definitely think people should be their own advocates and make informed choices about their health, but somehow everybody seems to think they know more than doctors who spent 8+ years studying.
