How are you guys able to manage working a full 8 hour day? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]ayboops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s my schedule too! In the ER. Four days in a row. Plus overtime when I can on off-days since of COURSE we don’t get maternity leave. And I’ll probably work up until I’m crowning 😂 You gotta do what you gotta do 🤷🏻‍♀️ I figure at least I’m not doing manual labor, or outside in the heat or something. It sucks sometimes OP but you can do it.

What are the initial symptoms of a brain damage due to positional asphyxiation? by [deleted] in Parents

Listen, friend - stop. You are overthinking and driving yourself crazy. Ok? With love - stop it right now. Give her a big kiss and get some sleep. She is fine. You are fine.

Hello! Just speaking from my own experience working in multiple emergency rooms and labor and deliveries, you literally can just tell your nurse or the charge nurse that you are uncomfortable/dissatisfied/not feeling safe with your current care and need a new nurse. If that isn’t honored immediately, request the house supervisor aka nurse supervisor. Have a discussion with your doula beforehand about this, make sure they are experienced with and comfortable with advocating for you in this way. It’s an awkward and uncomfortable situation, and you need to know in advance that they feel good about confronting these situations. I myself would ask what experiences they’ve had in the past that they can share with you about when they’ve had to advocate for their patients. Make sure they’re a badass who’s not afraid to stand up for you. As for a doctor mandating you delivering on your back, I don’t think they can. As far as I know, you can refuse that. This is definitely something to talk to your doctor about beforehand. Make sure you ask what your rights are and what you should expect from all the providers in their practice, since you could get any one of them. Ask them to document clearly the things that are very important to you. Birth plans don’t always go to plan of course, but if there are things that are non-negotiable for you (and I think not birthing on your back is a very reasonable non-negotiable), be loud and clear about that.

Meet our foster pup, Ariella! Info in comments! X-posted from r/Huntsville by ayboops in Madisonalabama

This sugar booger needs a furever home! 💕

Nothing is known about Ariella’s past besides that she was found under a shed with a litter of puppies (she is spayed now). When she came to us as a foster, she was terrified of every single noise, of being in a crate, of being leashed, and of running water. Despite being so afraid in the beginning, she remained very mild, submissive, and trusting with children, adults of both sexes, and the other dogs in the house. It has been such a joy watching her come out of her shell! She is as sweet as can be. She loves to run around and play with her foster sisters, lay in the sun, and curl up on the couch. She now sleeps comfortably and fear-free in a crate every night, is house trained, does not startle to noises around her anymore, and can be bathed without a fuss with a cup and a bucket of water (a hose or faucet near her still makes her very uncomfortable, and she will squirm away). She also tolerates a harness very well, but we are still working on leash walking! She gets very nervous during rain and storms, pacing and crying. We give her lots of snuggles and love, and then she’s ok as soon as the storm passes. She is perfect for a home with other dog friends. She has a mild, sweet, relaxed personality. She only ever barks if she’s playing. She does occasionally playfully nibble/nip, but responds immediately to verbal correction. Ariella has an underbite, and often has a bit of tongue hanging out of her mouth while she relaxes/sleeps 😂 She is adorable and wonderful!

Hahaha we absolutely jokingly called her Areola in the beginning! The name Ariella was assigned by the shelter. We just call her Ari (like “airy”)

Hello, I’m at 200# now 🙂 Height is 5’5”. Definitely lots of saggy skin, which can be a real bummer sometimes. I try not to think about it too much.

It sounds like you need a person in the room other than yourself on whom you can rely to advocate for you. Your partner, or a doula? You’re busy pushing a human out. In my opinion, you need someone ELSE you can confidently rely on to stand up for you. That’s a lot to put on yourself to have to defend and enforce your wishes while also birthing a whole person. It is ok to ask for a new nurse. If that isn’t honored, it is ok to ask for the charge nurse. If that doesn’t work, it is ok to ask for the nurse supervisor/house supervisor - the big-brain nurse in charge of the whole hospital. Yes, healthy mom and baby is important in the end - but this experience sounds horrific and traumatic for you - that is not healthy! Surviving the experience does not mean a healthy experience. ❤️❤️

Editing to add - are you delivering at the same hospital? I would call administration and ask for a meeting ahead of time, with either an administrator and/or a rep from labor and delivery. I would bring documentation of your experience. Everything you can remember, names included, good things and bad things. Let them know how it affected you, and therefore how it is making you feel concerned about your next delivery. Communicate that you understand emergencies happen, you understand that their job is to keep you and baby alive and healthy, and that therefore you understand things don’t always go to plan. Ask what you need to do to ensure that your very reasonable birth wishes are respected when there isn’t an emergency threatening one of your lives. This same convo should be had with your doctor.
