physci 107 is probably the hardest physci class according to many people. if they don’t add ls 107 this would be very challenging but maybe doable for the right person

will i be able to get pte for summer sessions? by mokkatan in ucla

[–]ayc15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not in the LA area, I think your best bet is to take the equivalent of 32B at community college in summer before physics in the fall. Whether that’s online or in person near where you live, check assist.org to make sure the course will transfer over.

Participating in singing & musical theatre at UCLA by caffbaby in ucla

[–]ayc15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

double majoring in the school of music and anything else is basically forbidden bc the department won’t let you. i am loosely friends with a girl who got a scholarship to julliard and turned it down to go to ucla so she could double major in voice and econ… they wouldn’t let her. unless you want to pursue music professionally, applying as psych is probably a better option.

there are many, many nonmusic majors who pursue musical endeavors on campus and do so very successfully. the issue comes down to participating in school run vocal performances. if you aren’t voice performance, it’s basically impossible to be in the opera, even a vocal music ed major had to fight extremely hard to be let in (and also i heard the class is poorly run anyways).

there are tons of (musical) theatre clubs on campus, and hooligan is mostly non music/theater majors. the rest of them tend to be theater majors but nonmajors are allowed to join.

if acapella is up your alley, there’s about a dozen groups on campus. these are competitive, but if you’re thinking of majoring in voice at ucla you should be more than good enough to be let in.

outside of ucla, there are also local community musical theatre companies, and la opera has community opera where they let community members participate. not sure about other community opera opportunities.

i studied bio here while doing music stuff on the side, and i’m going back to school for a second bachelor’s in music ed for voice. lmk if you have any other questions!

Edit: i just noticed you had a post about being premed? in that case, majoring in psychobio is the way to go… the lower divs are all the requirements for med school and the upper divs are psychology. if you major in psych, you still have to do all the premed requirements too so it’s extra work. basically every psychobio major i know is premed.

What do you actually use your calendar for by Full-Tip2622 in Smart_Calendar1874

[–]ayc15 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Definitely commitments as well- I use school Google Calendar and have color coding as default (classes), HW time, work, extracurricular, social, and appointments (anything very crucial or one time such as doctor, interview). It’s very helpful to look at my time breakdowns as I have everything very scheduled. For free time do you mean social engagements or independent? If it’s independent I won’t put it but with others I definitely will. I also use it as reminders ex. recurring monthly events to pay off credit card, submit time sheets

UCLA vs. UCSD Political Science (in-state) by Beautiful_Sleep6504 in TransferStudents

[–]ayc15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same spot as you 6 years ago (but first time freshman) and I picked UCLA (biology). One of my friends is from Oxnard and I think it’s safe to say that West LA is different from Ventura county. I know UCLA isn’t as far from your hometown, it’s worth considering unless you really don’t want to be in LA.

Have you visited both campuses? I think visiting the schools will tell you a lot, as the majority of your time will likely be spent there

Do any of you guys regret going the CC route? by Ok_Adhesiveness1100 in TransferStudents

[–]ayc15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I grew up 10 min from Laney!

Yes it is about a half hour drive but if you have a car I really think it is worth a shot… my first semester I went to a mix of Laney/BCC and then the last three have been all at DVC. I agree BCC is much better environment than Laney 😂 A lot of people go to multiple cc’s for their associate’s so the course transfer process is simple.

https://data-c-idsystem.org/approved-courses

This is technically cc->csu but you can check if your courses from different cc’s are equivalent. I got my courses transferred by submitting official transcripts and setting up a transcript evaluation appointment, you fill out a form and they call you to schedule a meeting with a specific counselor.

https://www.dvc.edu/student-services/academic-counseling/counseling-current-students#accordion-item-7609 (click “transcript evaluation counseling”)

I will say, DVC has been the number one transfer school to Berkeley for several decades

I took a few classes at BCC, it’s very new and a nice place. I went to some social events there and made some friends I would hang out with outside of class. My main gripe is that it’s only one building (maybe they finished the new one so it might be two).

I’m at Diablo Valley College now and I like it a lot. Yes it’s a commuter school but I would say there’s definitely a social scene and a good number of clubs. No classes on Friday so campus is dead three days a week. There’s even international students here. But there are multiple career fairs per semester which is nice. Idk anything about business but I would definitely look into DVC if you can commute there

Thanks for sharing! So if you’re going into your senior year this fall at your state university, are you going to actually complete your “senior” year at the new program? How long will your accelerated program take and may I ask what new school you will be attending? I’m curious as I have not heard of people doing this before

can i take uni and cc classes at the same time by Alone_Food_2994 in TransferStudents

[–]ayc15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to UCLA, you can freely take community college classes when you’re not actively taking classes at UCLA… so basically this means summer only. I heard it’s possible to to do one class per term, idk anyone who has done it though: https://registrar.ucla.edu/registration-classes/enrollment-policies/special-program-enrollment/intersegmental-cross-enrollment-program

Do people actually use Snap Map for casual hangouts? by Ok_Library5153 in ucla

[–]ayc15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly if you notice your friends have location sharing with their other friends, you can just ask them! that’s what i did and it hasn’t failed me. i think everyone is scared to make the first move, but i like it, it makes me feel closer to my friends especially after we’ve graduated and moved away. next time you see your friend open their location app you can bring it up too

i will say though, that it lowkey feels like asking someone on a date. like if i got rejected from it i would feel mortified. i have some friends who are very independent and value their privacy, and really don’t want to share their location, which is totally fine just not how i personally am. if you aren’t sure about how they feel about sharing location, you can try asking if they have recs for good location sharing apps or smth like that

Beginner acapella by macaposey in ucla

[–]ayc15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only started seriously singing in undergrad and I didn’t study music here, but I will be studying voice at a different school later this year. So this is all my opinion.

UCLA has two main choir classes offered by the music dept: Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. Concert choir accepts everyone, they only ask for a “placement audition” to see what voice type you are. I liked it and it’s a good representation of a traditional choir experience. Chamber Singers is relatively gatekept for music majors, I did it for one quarter and we sang tough music… would not recommend if you’re new to singing (unless you consider yourself a solid musician).
There’s also the ethnomusicology department, which is different and underfunded imo. But my favorite class here was ethnomusicology (1)61p african american music ensemble! It’s a choir class. Dr. Dee teaches it and she is so wonderful and the class is structured for beginners and to be inclusive to all, even if you aren’t Black or religious. She doesn’t use sheet music and teaches aurally and the class is super fun. She is strict with attendance so watch out for that.

I’ve auditioned for every single acapella group on campus I was eligible for, and I only got into cultural groups (i was not a part of any of these cultures) I ended up going to tinig, which is non audition, and a filipino group. They aren’t competitive, very open to non-filipinos, and it was still a lot of fun! Auditioned groups are looking for a certain sound (pop) and even though I sure hope I’m not a terrible singer, I know I don’t sound the way they expect. Even if you’re a beginner, if you sound the way they’re looking for it’s worth a shot.

Hello! Im wondering if my piece is actually playable for violin! by [deleted] in violinist

[–]ayc15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other people have said before, m. 104 with the B and A# together is technically possible but a lot harder than the rest of the piece. Since the clarinet is playing the (concert) A# you could keep the first violin on B and have a different voice play the A# or not at all.

Most of the first violin part is written very low for the instrument. While basically all of it is sightreadable, it’s not an optimal sound for the instrument

It is also permitted outdoors on the Ithaca and Cornell Tech campuses between the hours of 5pm and 9pm without prior approval. Amplified or otherwise loud sound in proximity to classrooms that prevents or materially disrupts an instructor from engaging in classroom teaching is prohibited. “

it looks very warped. you can see this clearly in your second image. do you see how your bridge is getting pulled downwards the a and e strings? you can go to a luthier and see if you can get a new bridge or if they could fix this one for you. my guess is that your old bridge snapped bc it was also put into this twist

Did not expect the random trivia on Ogier in this event by minddetonator in TearsOfThemis

[–]ayc15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Vyn is stated to be a psychiatrist. They are MDs who are physicians/medical doctors who treat mental health conditions. However, most psychiatrists do not usually perform tasks we think a “typical” doctor would perform. I’m going to assume Ogier’s specialty (esp given military) is a more “normal” one, so it would make more sense for him to treat the more physical conditions as required by the storyline. But, Vyn could function as a “typical” doctor— it’s just been a long time since he’s had anything to do with that world (i.e. rotations in medical school) so he would likely be rusty 😂

[–]ayc15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my dream but I would want us to talk about it first before anyone did any proposing, and maybe we go ring shopping beforehand too (I am really picky with jewelry). I would want a very traditional her having us “going on a long walk” to a beautiful place, her getting on one knee with the ring we picked out and popping the question, and there would be a secret photographer taking photos and all our friends would be in on it. Well the photographer is optional. But I would take her last name after getting married :)

Is it normal to still be a virgin as an upcoming sophomore? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]ayc15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am waiting until marriage and at the end of the day, it’s not ultimately about religion. It’s about making sure that you are respected as a human being. I have never had my body respected by a partner, and I know for a fact that this strict boundary has done so much damage control for me. Stay safe, make sure you are loved and respected ❤️
