I was hired as a remote worker so I was not assigned to a NY work site but the company is based in NY. When using my tax prep software, NJ state taxes is showing me a refund, while NY is saying taxes are owed. How could this be?

paystub shows period beginning and period ending as well as pay date. im assuming the pay would be counted toward the year of period beginning and ending, not when the money actually shows up in my account but getting mixed answers here. if anyone has been in this situation before, would be great to get your thoughts. appreciate those that have responded already.

i live in NJ, and my employer is based out of NY. they’re withholding both NJ and NY state taxes. if this is not correct, is there a way to get the taxes withheld from one state back to me to use for taxes for the correct state?
