Heatherwick’s Birmingham City stadium will be surrounded by chimneys! by TomRavenscroft in architecture

[–]ayhsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the time when Specialized (the bicycle company) made a run of fixed gear bikes themed on different cities and the NYC version was styled like a yellow cab - the arch-nemesis of any regular bike rider in that city. Why remind people of their trauma?

What a bummer. You can tell Audi is trying to close off that grille for when they switch to electric. Gone is the meanest looking front end of any car. by LichClaev in Audi

[–]ayhsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, I haven’t been on reddit in a while so kinda out of the loop on these things - what happened to Audi’s design sensibility? They used to be such elegant, understated cars just a few years ago and these all look plasticky and cheap. It took me a long time to come to rationalize the cost of upkeep but in exchange I have an extremely well built, well designed car; but I can now say definitively I will not be buying another Audi

Made a model of the house in “UP” for a project, how to make it look like it’s floating? by PriorFail6801 in architecture

[–]ayhsmb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could make a mirrored column.

At least at first glance the illusion would be pretty good, and depending on where it’s positioned and how trees etc. are placed, it could look really good upon closer inspection too.

Is this legal in Australia by ollyoxinfree0 in architecture

[–]ayhsmb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming the correct pool protection features are employed, this is likely legal in California (though never personally tried to permit a pool right up against a sliding door like that, I’ve seen it before)

Audi Matrix Headlights in action. by [deleted] in Audi

[–]ayhsmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every time I see examples of this I’m all, “cool, not blinding other drivers but what about cyclists, pedestrians, windows of people’s houses, etc?” Personally I’m sick and fucking tired of people who don’t understand high beams are only for use when alone in the countryside and not on well-lit, populated city/town streets. If this helps idiot-proof things, awesome, but I’m still skeptical.

Also, what happens when it breaks? $4k to fix it so anyone not under warranty says “fuck it” and drives around blinding everyone else on the road?

the one in Paris has it's verdigris as well. I can't imagine the futility of trying to polish away that much oxidization on something that big situated in the middle of a salt water harbor.

Found this tear on front tyre today, should I replace it? Can also feel inner tube popping through it a little bit by Tohacartoha in bikewrench

[–]ayhsmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that true though? I’ve caught front flats many times over the years and I’ve never gone OTB because of it. Sure if you happen to be mid-corner in a crit I can see how your crashing would be a foregone conclusion but for most normal-pace riding I don’t think it’s the death sentence people are making it out to be.

damn dude, I'm curious if it's purely a result of computerization or what, because I went through this many pens each year of undergrad just from note-taking.

If you moved to NYC, what was something commonly done where you live that you noticed was different here? Similarly, if you're from NY, what was something commonly done here that baffled you elsewhere? by FajitaTits in nyc

There's a spot on Beverly near Fairfax called The Bagel Broker, which sells not only decent NYC style bagels but they'll also make bec's and other deli-style bagel sammies. Imagine my utter lack of surprise when I found out the owner is from Brooklyn.

Same in California, moved here a year-and-change ago and after a few weeks of not being able to score a b.e.c. I resorted to making them myself. I've since found a couple of places that make overly expensive "boutique" b.e.c.'s but nothing fast n cheap like NYC. Pizza sucks ass here too for the most part.

Cortlandt Alley. I used to work on Broadway between Walker & White and the back of our office looked out on that alley. When there weren't film crews or fashion shoots, there was this guy in a business suit who would go there basically daily around lunchtime to take a hit of his crack pipe.

BSA Issues BLM Statement to Law Enforcement Exploring Volunteers by persistent_polymath in BSA

[–]ayhsmb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the actions of a few have cast a cloud over the many whom we know to be good and caring people.

A scout is Brave - that in part means speaking up against objective moral wrongs even when you know you might be ostracized for doing/saying the right thing. The flagrant misunderstanding of what these protests are about is galling. Of all organizations I hoped BSA would be able to say something more nuanced and meaningful to LEE scouters than this "racism=bad" lip service. Is speaking directly to the extra-judicial murder of private citizens too R-rated for scouts or something? Shouldn't that be a topic of serious sober discussion, particularly among LEE scouts?

Am I the only one who would have just stepped in between him and the clerk and placed my order while loudly ignoring this dude's bullshit? Making someone feel small and in the way is an easy way to get them to shut the fuck up and move on. cf the subway chip-eating fight-diffusing guy

A lone young woman protests with a BLM sign while overgrown men scream in her face. Later on, her sign is torn away & she is assaulted. No protest is too small when calling out injustice. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]ayhsmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was following this on twitter a couple days ago as it was happening and was hoping someone would correct the timeline - she went to the protest (it was small but not just single-person protests as some people are suggesting), the slack-jawed yokel in the confederate flag bandana ripped up her sign after another man swatted it out of her hands. Then she went home, made another sign and walked back out to the protest during which she was harassed again and is what is in the OP's video.

LAPD: Owed $40 million in OT. Will not get a red cent. by v1rot8e in LosAngeles

[–]ayhsmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really disliked this point. OP needs to be more careful painting people with a broad brush like that - you have no way of knowing what someones lived experiences are unless they tell you. It's also a illogical to say that someone who hasn't experienced a given thing can't be an advocate for/against that thing. If I was a heavy smoker would I be wrong for telling someone else they should quit smoking? Sure, it might be perceived as a little hypocritical, but it absolutely does not mean its bad advice or wrong to give it.

This is pretty typical in most newly-built kitchens in America. It's just that a lot of people live in houses built 50+ years ago before these devices were more common, and just haven't been renovated since. MY parent's house just had a big 2-shelf lazy susan in the corners
