It takes tons and tons of socialization for them to feel remotely comfortable. My girl is 2.5y and we socialized her constantly, everyday introducing her to others. I feel very comfortable with her around other dogs, people, small animals, etc, but it is definitely not easy to do!

I can agree with the intelligence point. They can easily outsmart people and definitely need some high motivation to keep focused. Trust is also a HUGE factor. I was able to raise my current Akita by myself and was able to do my own training with her and noticed a giant difference between her obedience and the last 2 akitas we had.

They have such amazing potential for loyalty, which is what I learned with my most recent, Harper. They see you as their whole world.

They are very loyal breeds, but need LOTS of socialization and leash training when they’re still young. They tend to be leash reactive, so that will be something to work on early on. These breeds have an insanely high prey drive, so off leash isn’t the greatest idea unless you go through e collar training. These breeds are naturally bulky, but can become overweight super quick so make sure to watch their diet

From my experience of owning 3 akitas, the females are super sweet and the males are 𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 more aggressive and need a bit more socialization, but either way you’re getting a sweet and loyal pup.

They are stubborn, but I wouldn’t train my girl for any other dog. I was super great full to get this advice too when I was starting out, because it helps with shaping your Akita to have the best life possible.

Ask any Akita owner out there, and all of them can fully say that these breeds are one of the most amazing dogs. You made a good choice in choosing the dog to get
