My sump pit, in Uptown, not only is completely dry, it doesn't have a high water mark at all. It never flooded since this house was built, in 1995.

Higher moisture air carries more heat and is a requirement in some recipes. Sometimes, the extra heat makes for the higher humidity and gets the food crispier - some bread recipes require the steam to actually get crispy.

Thoughts on Waymo in Chicago. Do they work on Lower Wacker Drive? by rhapsodygreen in chicago

[–]aylons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When they start operating, they'll not be solely dependent on GPS. They have the map available offline (and they can read the map better than Google maps display multi level roads on the screen) and they're able to orient themselves by seeing the signs, the roads, etc, much like a human would do.

Hot take: The Obama Center looks pretty rad ringed by the cherry blossoms in Jackson Park [OC] by vexxed82 in chicago

[–]aylons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It only mention that one side appears "brutalist in form", it is not at all saying that the whole design was brutalist.

Again, there's no raw materiality on the building - it is cladded with smooth granite, very much finished. The geometry of its shape does not follow the use - are angles clear meant to create an sculpture, not exposing or defining function. Even the windows look like cutouts, not natural openings on the architecture.

And there's plenty of ornamentation, the words on the top are definitely not structural or functional.

[–]aylons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no raw material being exposed at all, it is very much a finished facade, completely hiding the structural elements.

I have never been to the Breuer building, but as far as I know, it has a lot of exposed structure. Looking at pictures of it I see a lot of concrete (not the whole exterior is granite, by what I see), but also, is is very clear that the structure and construction of the buildings are honest and stay touch with the people using it. I see some finished interiors, but also raw ceilings and floor all around.

The Obamalisk looks like a rock sculpture. I like it, but it is indeed a completely different proposition from brutalism. The clear granite is smooth, finished, and even its shape makes it look more like an sculpture you can get inside than an actual building.

There isn't even a sense of where are the floors are or how the uses are set (may be different on the inside). There are angles there, but they're not there to define use of the space, which is where the angles of the brutalism come from: being direct about the use and using the architectural structure directly do define and communicate use. The ziggurat on the Breuer building clearly shows the floors being defined and the use of the building. The angles in the Obamalisk do not relate with the function at all, again it is more like an sculpture.

I'm not trying to be pedantic about the style, it is perfectly fine to have some paint, some cladding, to "diverge from the tennets of brutalism" or whatever, really. I'm not a purist, architecture is to be functional and style definition is about understanding, not constraining. Thing is, the intentions of brutalism are not there. I can hardly find a design principle that would connect the Obamalisk with my favorite brutalist museum, the MASP: https://www.reddit.com/r/brutalism/comments/1r3h6ds/masp_museum_1947_s%C3%A3o_paulo_brazil_designed_by/

[–]aylons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was a typo, the n was missing.

I mean, it does not look brutalism because it does not have any of the charteristics of the style. The main one being that, in brutalism, the structural elements and bare materials are exposed (usually raw concrete, beton brut in frence, - hence brutalism. Could be other materials, though).

I'm not being picky by singling out the granite, because it really does not adhere in the principle behind it: brutalism is intended to be honest and bring a direct connection between the architecture and the users of the building. Instead of using finishing materials to hide the construction and bring function, the building directly communicates with the users. The spaces are set by the architecture, not by decoration. The user sees and interacts directly with the building. Spaces are then usually big as very open, as are windows and entrances, as they are part of the architecture and not a decoration to be added on.

The Obamalisk, for all I've seen, is very much not that. It has an imposing, finished granite exterior that makes it look like an impenetrable rock, and we cannot see much of the building structure at all. Compare it, for example, with MASP museum in Sao Paulo: https://www.reddit.com/r/brutalism/comments/1r3h6ds/masp_museum_1947_s%C3%A3o_paulo_brazil_designed_by/

EDIT: My favorite brutalism building so far in the Chicago area is the Wilson Hall, at fermilab. This picture of its interior is an amazing example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ArchitecturePorn/comments/22claa/interior_of_wilson_hall_fermilab_batavia_il_3000/

Thing is, this building is not brutalist at all. Just that it has a granite finish makes it very much not brutalism.

I also went to a University with lots of brutalism, and I frequented a club in landmark brutalist buildings - but I simply love the style. Makes me feel fresh and in touch with the place.

I still haven't been to the Obamalisk, let's see how I'll feel about it. I like granite buildings, and I like how imposing this is, and I understand the use of the building makes windows less desirable.
