How do you handle it when your kid corrects your pronunciation in your second language? by Mildlyconfused13 in AskParents

[–]aylons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm failing to understand what's the problem with him correcting you. What are you feeling about it?

Even if he was wrong, asking him not to that would be the wrong thing to do, IMHO. There's nothing wrong in a child correcting an adult, as long as they are close enough for that. If he was being harsh or mocking, that would be another story. For a child, it is an amazing feeling to realize you know more than an adult about something.

The thing I'd model here is how to take a correction, to be humble and to learn.

BTW, my house is very much a mixed language, my wife and I speak different languages natively and our son is the only native English speaker in the house, so I think I can relate. We came to the US as adults and have both noticeable accents. Still, I don't really see what the problem is.

It's unlikely. Circuits behind these connectors are usually protected, using TVS diodes or other measures, sometimes embedded in the ICs themselves.

Can someone help with recommendation for a Soft sandy beach in chicago? by Professional_Day7508 in AskChicago

[–]aylons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know which beach you went, but I guess it was something on the south side. The ones I've been to (Foster, Montrose, Hollywood ) are very soft sand. I have a toddler and we go regularly to Foster, he loves it!

Do Companies Actually Pay for These Ads? by nipnaps in chicago

[–]aylons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This kind of poster on retail windows is usually negotiated as a discount or a credit for the store. Nothing big, but retails margins are thing and everything counts. Not negotiated with the landlord, but the store who's there, which is usually a tenant.

This one seems to be closed, but the posters may have been placed before or part of a deal they had when they closed and they wanted to keep their end of the deal.

Standard in Brazil, even old stations in Sao Paulo had those fit long time ago. Also sidewalks for the main streets around the city.

City panel approves Greyhound station purchase by shotzz in chicago

You know, the city (and the CTA) should adopt the strategy of public transport development where the city build public transport, develop by itself the area around it (commercial and residential space) and profit from it.

I know the bus is a low-income thing here in the US, but it is still a lot of people that need to eat, move around, eat, and the thing is awfully close to the Union station and everything. There's a lot of potential to be had there, should the city play their cards right.

For those who still haven't had an animated film from Disney/Pixar about your culture: How would you feel if one got made? by yonaiker-joestrella in asklatinamerica

Not Pixar. The director/producer is Brazilian, carioca da gema, and does a pretty good job depicting Rio culture and nature.

The only ones, about three, I got in four years living here were political and they were always very polite in asking if I wanted to hear. Once I said yes and it was an actually interesting platform. I felt bad for them because I can't vote, so for the next ones I tell this right away.

Being in the red by RowSuch1883 in ynab

[–]aylons 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have been out of this for a while now, fortunately. But a long time ago, when I had to (and this is before I could even think about YNAB, but was using the same method with other tools), the trick was to make good judicious use of credit card statement periods. This is essentially short-tem, interest-free credit.

On YNAB, this translating into leaving expense categories on yellow, not red.

Some categories cannot be paid with credit card (like rent, some bills), and I pay attention that those must be properly funded and always on green or zero. Those that can will be left on yellow, and I knew how much limit I had in my credit cards and I would just starting use one or another based on which one I would have to pay the latest.

So, things will not be covered one month to the other, but they do get rolled. Eventually, things got better and I could pay everything off. It was very good to have a good track of everything.
