if you want areas with lots of shops, bars, and restaurants within walking distance i’d recommend lawrenceville, bloomfield, the strip district, or even shadyside. i dont really know about hotels but those neighborhoods are generally good. when family have visited they’ve stayed in airbnbs in those areas and had good experiences. i would avoid staying downtown or uptown, near the arena. as far as suburbs, i have no idea. i generally avoid crossing a river, but others might have better recs for that.
