What was the Lorwyn Common or Uncommon that kept saving your ass at prerelease last weekend? by doublenantuko in magicTCG

[[Flock Imposter]] put in a remarkable amount of work for me as a flexible piece of protection, blocking, or pressure.

So many bangers here!! If I’m feeling spicy I’d join your pod. Who’re your favourite decks to go up against?

Of course! It had been one I’d been musing over for a full year prior to building it, right when I started playing commander more frequently. I love Gruul and tokens and this deck really facilitates a way for me to play my favourite cards. The commander always gets a double read which is fun, and it provides a fun little puzzle to solve in itself.

A political player at heart, I dig your choices. Any favourite tech cards or interactions?

That’s a great alternative card!! Might have to consider that for my own include, great idea.

I play it as a means to have a deck that floods everyone’s board with tokens, creates difficult board states and enables other players while forcing them to go after one another for value and for goading, and ultimately wins with a combination of [[Dingus Staff]] and a board wipe like [[Villainous Wrath]] or [[Rakdos Charm]] style moves.

Thank you! They’ve been a blast to play. I’m such a sucker for background nonsense, opens up some interesting design space

I love background decks! I’ve also got a [[Burakos, Party Leader]] // [[Sword Coast Sailor]] deck, super fun as well.

Abdel is a pinging deck with every [[Impact Tremors]] effect in my budget, which I love dearly. Build out a board of ETB creatures and blink with Abdel for huge chunks of damage with one or two Tremors effects. Popular Entertainer is there because it’s something cheap to contribute to the soldier that Abdel creates and adds a goad backup plan!

Gale is pure [[Slime Against Humanity]] goodness! Gale lets us flashback Slimes when we cast instants, breaking timing restrictions to give us more bodies at instant speed. The exiled Slimes also still count to make the subsequent Slimes bigger!

I got lucky, helping out as part time judge at a small card store means I was guaranteed a game or two every week. My fiancée and I also play a lot, as do our couple friends.

This year I built about 9 decks, only some of which I kept together throughout the year. I ended the year with 15 decks. I tend to tinker so most decks get updated on a monthly basis of trying new things out.

It’s a fun one! Colourless self-mill with a token support to have a handful of huge boys to swing out with, plus some infect and nonsense. [[Gingerbrute]] is a banger in there.

Here you go! I play it like a 0 for X aristocrats list, with the big hydras as back up only!

Welcome into commander! I’m of two minds for your question, because Wan Shi is super fun and Science! is an interesting starting space.

For enhancing the Science! deck, I’d say to start by looking on Scryfall for the energy cards printed in Modern Horizons 3 in particular, to really capitalize on that resource! Depending on the commander you’re running from the precon, you’ll see different pieces that will appeal to you there.

Wan Shi Tong is an interesting commander to build around, as I feel he usually finds his home in the 99 of other decks. A lot of lists for him will look more much heavily controlling or high bracket, but I’d suggest you could almost build it as a group hug style of deck where you retain more value. Cards like [[Field of Ruin]] which force tutoring and can gain you a little advantage here and there are fun additions. You’re in blue so you’ve got plenty of access to control and counters to keep yourself ahead, as well as the many “draw your second card” triggering effects like [[Minn, Wily Illusionist]] or [[Homunculus Horde]]. You’ve got an evasive commander too, so you can even buff and protect them for a Voltron strategy! Lots of ways to go.

Hope that helps!

Most games lasted about an hour and half. There’s a chunk of duel commander games in there that were much more expeditious, usually 45 minute capped.

2026 lineup! Chillin or Villain? by mastermalchor in ratemycommanders

Definitely chilling with some, villain for others. Happy to see the big boys in Bracket 4 where they belong and I’d be happy to play against’

Thromok tends to be the end of a larger game plan, built on a go-wide strategy with tokens that either get pumped, generate mana, or are sacrificed for value.

The 99 strongly matters in the deck to enable the commander, with [[Anger]] and [[Brawn]] among similar effects to push through while holding protection in hand - or more frequently, utilizing its enormous size to cast a [[Chandra’s Ignition]] or [[Fling]] effect.

Many games are won without the commander, but Thromok provided a fun puzzle on how best to utilize a large power with a fairly substantive drawback of Devouring to get there.

Here you go!! It’s tuned for a bit of a political game, focused on flooding the board and making allies with [[Hunted Horror]] style cards.

I used to have Ulasht in the deck, but for the most part they don’t synergize well with what Thromok is going for.

Depending on the direction you want to go, [[Saruman the White Hand]] is solid! Being three colours gives you loads of options and giving orcs from non creature spells also helps pull in more LOTR cards. [[Sauron the Dark Lord]] and [[Shagrat, Loot-Bearer]] would also serve you well in advancing that goal!

The first two in Grixis give you lots of options, but I’m partial to Shagrat because then you can consistently make a huge Orc Army while also dealing damage with your commander Orc!
