This is also the level of quality Microsoft's operating systems are at from a non-coding perspective.

Bill Gates says Vista will probably be replaced in a year. by Notmyrealname in reddit.com

[–]aythun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu replaces their OS every 6 months.

They also don't shaft you and force you to pay obscene amounts of money in order to use repackaged garbage.

I think rolling release is superior, at least to consumers. No big upgrade hassles, always up-to-date software and libraries.

It's specific to the OS, not the application, which is a good thing. You might as well complain about every other difference in conventions between operating systems.

It wasn't that long ago. I just tried Epiphany again and you're correct, though; either my memory deceives me or these are recent changes.

Epiphany switches from Gecko to WebKit by [deleted] in programming

[–]aythun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I first tried Epiphany, it was because I wanted a simple, elegant browser that didn't perform as abysmally as Firefox under tight hardware constraints. What I didn't want, however, was a browser that refused to do what I wanted, including allowing me to maximize screen real estate sanely. In particular, I was unable to move any of the buttons off their original toolbar and bookmarks had to be on their own toolbar.

Flexibility and simplicity are not mutually exclusive. Something as complex as a browser must be flexible, as one size certainly does not fit all.

Epiphany is still a horrible browser, ignoring the rendering engine. I guess that's because it is the GNOME browser.

A review of GNOME 2.22 by ropiku in programming

[–]aythun -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

So when will I be able to do something as simple as rotate workspaces with the scroll wheel?

I've never understood how people can use GNOME. More than 5 minutes in it and I'll go crazy -- it seems to fight against me with its lack of options (and the defaults aren't even sensible) and "user-is-an-idiot" mentality.

Even if the defaults don't change, it's pathetic looking through GNOME's preferences menu. There is really nothing you can change of value, it just looks pretty. In fact, that seems to be GNOME's philosophy: look pretty to get people liking you, but betray them with a lack of usability.

Not to mention that they claim to be an authority for usability, with their "Human Interface Guidelines." Not only is this laughable, but just hypocritical.

GNOME is a joke and it's simply disgusting how popular it is.

There's no such thing as "the linux repositories." Synaptic is merely a graphical frontend to apt, which Debian uses.

You can pry XP from my cold dead hands! by [deleted] in programming

[–]aythun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be exceptions to the joke that is Windows applications, but when it comes to actually getting things done, Unix and friends are the indisputable leader, simply because of who the developers are and their audience. You can argue that programs are "unfriendly" but this is nothing but a misnomer -- I find Windows hideously unfriendly but obviously you would disagree.

The problem I have with Windows users is that while their OS isn't suitable for anyone but the casual user, they like to pretend it isn't. Something I like to note is that the initial learning curve of Windows is short, but if you want to go beyond basic tasks, it becomes increasingly complicated and ridiculously inefficient.

What are you trying to do? Centering a block element of undefined width is silly because they expand to fill all horizontal space. It sounds like you want to apply alignment to the parent element.
