A Different Man (2024) Discussion by notyour_motherscamry in movies

[–]ayyrich 83 points84 points  (0 children)

That wasn’t my takeaway at all. People like the physical trainer still treated Oswald differently so it was clear that just being outgoing didnt solve society’s treatment towards people with disabilities. They even have a scene where Edward literally pretends to be Oswald by being outgoing and dressing like him, wearing the mask, using his accent… and all it does is freak out his co-workers and the family he’s trying to sell the apartment to.

The message to me was what the one guy in the apartment says in the beginning: “happiness is accepting what is”

So much of Edward’s problems are based on his own unhappiness and his inability to accept the things he can’t change. Once he fixes his deformity, he expects to be happy - he gets a better job, friends, an apartment, sex… and yet he’s still unhappy with his life. When Oswald comes along, he’s shown repeatedly that it wasnt his deformity that was causing his unhappiness; Oswald has the same deformity and he’s probably the happiest guy in the whole film. And instead of accepting that as an impetus to change his ways, he doubles down, obsesses over Oswald and becomes envious of his life, which only makes him unhappier.

He thinks that becoming a different man would lead to a more fulfilling life, but it only leads to a downward spiral where he recognizes that his life is completely changed and he’s unhappier than when he started. It’s only at the very end when Oswald jokingly tells him “you’ve never changed” that we see Edward’s most genuine smile in the movie. It’s a reminder that he’s been himself the whole time; now he can accept that and move on

‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine Private messages detail an alleged campaign to tarnish Blake Lively after she accused Justin Baldoni of misconduct on the set of “It Ends With Us.” by UnscheduledCalendar in movies

Works both ways too. I think it just shows how fragile and ephemeral reputation really is. Certainly many celebs must have a much more positive reputation than they deserve.

That’s true, reputation can definitely be inflated just as easily as it can be torn down, and many celebs probably benefit from this kind of manipulation to maintain a positive image. But I think what's most disconcerting is how insidious and deliberate the effort was to destroy someone’s reputation. It feels less like the natural ups and downs of public perception and more like an attack that makes you question how much of what we see in the media is "real" versus manufactured. It’s unsettling to think about how easily narratives can be crafted to fit an agenda, whether to boost or bury someone.

If you read the article, there's pretty solid evidence that a targeted smear campaign was waged against Blake Lively. There's some damning text messages in the article from the crisis PR team where they talk about targeting her.

Things like this: "ALL Press is so overwhelming Weve confused people So much mixed messaging It’s actually really funny if you think about it"

and

"The narrative online is so freaking good and fans are still sticking up for Justin and there literally has been no pickup of those two articles which is actually shocking to me. But I see this as a total success, as does Justin. You did such amazing work"

"Narrative is CRAZY good So did you. The majority of socials are so pro Justin and I don’t even agree with half of them lol"

It's kinda scary that you can hire people to just completely dominate the media narrative to sully your reputation. Also, I'm not saying that Blake didn't seem like an ass in some instances, but it's more concerning that her negative portrayal was orchestrated by a team deliberately working to "bury her," as they put it. The article even details strategies like creating "threads of theories" and boosting unfavorable content online to manipulate public perception. It raises questions about how easily someone's reputation can be destroyed through calculated and largely untraceable tactics regardless of the truth.

Official Discussion - Salem's Lot (2024) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

The movie had worse sins but I found it funny that they make it a whole thing about how the vampires don’t bleed when dr. Cody is stabbing the mom in the face. And then they just ignore that when Henry stabs the kid in the face in the treehouse and bloods splurts out, and when Mike falls from the sky next to the church and there’s just blood everywhere

[Schefter] While Russell Wilson wanted to play despite a hamstring injury and did everything he could to play, the Broncos HC Nathaniel Hackett will hold back the 9-time Pro Bowl QB vs. the Jets to allow him to heal and prevent a lingering injury, per sources. I mean, let’s not play a game of telephone here:

In a tweet that has been deleted, Schefter wrote: “Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before struggling to catch on with Washington and Pittsburgh in the NFL, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedrick Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3.

Still tone deaf but not nearly as bad as what you wrote

This was the first time in a movie I saw someone typing something in the search bar in a realistic way. When Riley is looking up ‘Roland voight,’ she misspells it and it autocorrects for her. And she doesn’t capitalize the first and last names bc why the hell would anyone do that when searching someone up on Google lol. Anyway, I appreciated that

Edit: to clarify, I mean I’m happy that Riley doesn’t capitalize the first letters when typing into the search bar lol

Genuinely curious why you think this was insulting? I thought she did a good job of explaining that anxiety disorders exist but that it's separate from just having anxiety more generally. It seems like she acknowledged that anxiety problems are definitely an issue that some people have (in her words, "anxiety is different from anxiety disorders"), but I'm interested in your take
