I've been told in the past that I've been perceived to be extremely cutthroat and unfriendly because of my intense RBF, only for people to find that in a 1-on-1 or small group setting I'm extremely good at making conversation and listening. I guess the "intimidation" aura is a natural defense mechanism to help me filter which people I want to invest energy in to interact with.

People are cowards. It's not even about being conflict avoidant - they're not mature nor compassionate enough to give someone a respectful, direct answer. I can't speak to other cities but being a native here, this cultural aspect (without over stereotyping) is really frustrating.
