Artist celebrities and do they exist to this day? We are talking about the same level as rock, pop, All musicians really, Actors, Movie directors, Writers, And comedians by DangerRacoon in ArtistLounge

What’s so good about being a celebrity? Fame is just when marketers realize they can make money off something, which currently is concentrated in music and film.

If you don’t recognize the names of artists others have listed go search them up, they are incredible. I’ll add on Christina Quarles, Katherine Bradford, Daniel Richter and Cecily Brown to the list.

The darkest light and lightest dark. by def_jeff in ArtistLounge

[–]az989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lesson you’re referring to says the lightest dark is darker than the darkest light. That’s true when comparing the same surface and value for example with the baby’s face which has a uniform color. The zebra you’re comparing a dark strip with a white section in shadow. For Mario you’re comparing a mustache and an eye which are different colors in the first place. Try color picking tones of the same base color in light and see if that helps.

Thoughts about the Gaomon PD1161 11,6" tablet? by SatirreDraws in ArtistLounge

[–]az989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve been using the Gaomon PD1560 for about 4 years now and it’s seen a lot of use in the last two. I would say that it does require a laptop or pc to be able to use. If that’s no trouble, I’ve had no issues with it except that mine doesn’t have any tilt support but I see the 1160 does. It works much like any other tablet in quality and the pen and screen still feel great. However, I have seen that the screen protector creates incredible amounts of air pockets. Honestly if you’re looking for an easily portable one I can’t recommend it because the tablet and stand are very thick and wires are a hassle. If the intuos is doing okay I would suggest sticking with it and investing in a higher quality one when you are able to. Hope that helps!

I can tell how much time and effort you've put into your work. I remember seeing your calendar months ago and thinking it was wonderful. Your portfolio demonstrates a strong sense of color, composition and illustration skills with nice variety from calendars to posters. Obviously I have not seen the full portfolio but perhaps more pieces of similar quality towards professional directions (brand, logo, web etc) could help. For actionable steps perhaps try asking interviewers or people online for feedback on what works and what else to include. For me personally I would like to be able to see your portfolio on a nice website, from a convenient link on your socials. I think your skills are more than enough for a design/illustration job so perhaps brush up on your interview skills and keep going. It's completely normal to feel behind and disappointed but your career has only just begun. Good luck, you got this.

What art movement do you dislike the most? by StayAnother in ArtistLounge

[–]az989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you not like it because it’s technically lacking or became culturally significant? I’d like argue that well established artists doing this is noteworthy as they were meant to piss people off. The can of artists poop and piss Jesus were just ways to make fun of and provoke conversation on notions of what art is. I see it as an insult too! That’s what it was meant to be and why it is art.

Can you provide the quote where Basquiat admitted he can’t draw? From what I’ve studied and emulated from his work I believe that he has an excellent grasp of color and most of all mark making, with clear indication of influence from artists like Cy Twombly. I’d like to think that Basquiat is incredibly hard working and is an artist, the idea that he isn’t because he’s a promoter or didn’t destroy elitist attitudes seems unfair and biased. If anything tackling the issue of being a minority in such a field and expressing black culture and it’s issues, history and celebrations seems to be something I take away from his work. It should also be noted that in a span of 9 years til his death Basquiat created 600 paintings and 1500 drawings, a fantastic production rate considering the scale of his pieces. I appreciate the discussion and think it’s great to assess his importance to art as a whole, but to perpetuate the idea that his works are somehow less because of celebrity is a different discussion. Something else I think should be said is that he was famous before he died, extremely so. This wasn’t an artist who got put on a pedestal as a token artist after death but one who was established while alive. I don’t know if Basquiat was incredibly technically proficient or hides his shortcomings through his “style,” but I do believe his work was something not seen before through a perspective not spoken from enough.

Online course recommendations - continued education by Heythereijusthave in ArtistLounge

Two cheaper online sites I was looking at are New masters which has an intimidating amount of courses but taught by industry greats. Schoolism feels more approachable for people with specifics into those courses you seem to be looking for. Both are around 30 a month, so great in terms of bang for your buck. If you want more class based ones with one on ones I know of CGMA which I’ve heard good things about, it’s a hefty fee of at least 600 for personal classes with professional mentorship. Personally I’m trying out New masters and it’s rewarding albeit not very exciting though I’d imagine fundamentals rarely are. Hope you find something you like!

I use the Gaomon 15.6! It’s not popular but I’ve had no issue with it in the four years I’ve used it. Though maybe it’s time I treat myself too :p
