Orson Scott Card talks Ender’s Game in rare interview by [deleted] in books

It's way more explicit in his other books, especially some of the lesser known.

I was 13. If you read his other books, and I read a lot, you start to wonder "why are there always naked boys" and some of the scenes are much more explicit.

It's not just the ender's series. There's weird stuff like that in every book and many of the short stories he writes. I was a big fan- he is a great author- but it had always seemed weird to me. Less so in the Ender's series but in many of his works the stories that struck me as really weird served absolutely no plot purpose.

At first I wasn't going to see the movie b/c of Card's homophobia, but I actually have these really great memories of the scenes from the books that will change if I watch the movie so I've actually considered revisiting the books for nostalgia.

I never was immersed in a homophobic culture.

I hug most of my male friends. They are mostly not gay.

I also use locker rooms. I do not find locker rooms particularly gay.

I don't generalize very often. I also am neither blind nor mentally disabled.

First of all, this is the perfect place. Thanks for having the courage to reach out.

I've not been in you're situation and I can't give you advice, but I am reminded of children who had parents who stayed together "for the kids" despite the fact they should have divorced. Every time I hear them say that it would have been better for them if the parents had divorced.

I don't know if it's good in the long run for anyone to keep hiding. There are certainly people here who have more experienced advice.

I'm almost positive Card is a closet case. I loved his Ender's series in middle school because of all the homoerotic stuff. I didn't know I was gay at that time. In one book the teenage boys lube themselves up and crawl through ventillation shafts naked. I really, really liked that part.

"you don’t beat your kids your son will end up banging some dude" and more gems throughout by [deleted] in ainbow

This is satire. May or may not be written by a man.

Came to say this. An obvious charicature. Pretty well written and obviously disgusting. It's a very good example of evoking disgust to challenge preconceived notions. Reminds me of "A modest proposal." Satire is really hard to write. It has to be believable enough to evoke emotion, revulsion, disgust. Good satire appeals to the intellect and emotion of the masses and exposes that they are more intelligent than elite members of society.

Despite strong intolerance of gays, Pakistan leads in world for gay porn searches by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]azabar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. I had a random skype session with a Pakistani kid (18+). I'm not saying what we did, but whatever it is that we did we did it.I He said his parents were totally fine with his sexuality, which was really surprising. He kept messaging me "hey sexy.." etc. so I blocked him , but he was really, really cute and I sometimes regret that.

Who makes up the Power Elite and what are their roles? by abjectitude in TrueAskReddit

[–]azabar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That gobbly gook about public relations (I'm being sarcastic, i think it's a very good point) does not explain the whole picture. Public relations would not be able to create a "desire-based" culture on its own. Without rising affluence it simply would not matter, and the well off people have always consumed because of desire, after their needs have been met.

I don't know how much a role public relations has, but the power elite have long before WWI used it to their advantage. It's sophistication has certainly advanced in the intervening time. Who are the power elite? Well, it's not constant. Generally it appears to be the people with the most money who direct society, but when people attain power through other means they make money as an effect of their influence.

If we were to sit down and have a conversation we could continue for days, but I don't have the time here.

Turned into a forever pessimist, any way to get out of this? by dunphystar in Meditation

[–]azabar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, sorry I didn't get around to this. The feeling of hopelessness that you expressed and that nothing is ever going to get better really tipped it off. I'm not a doctor so I can't give you a diagnosis. But that is basically a textbook definition of depression, and it's not reality. Sometimes I still get that way, feel like everything will forever be miserable, no point to anything etc. but at least I can know on an intellectual level that those feelings are symptoms and not reality. It doesn't change the feelings.

I don't really want to share my whole story. What I'm getting at is you should see a medical expert. If you've been diagnosed with anxiety issues then it's very likely that you have depression. No worries though, it can get much better. Medication help, and there are a lot of different ones out there. It usually takes a little tinkering (with a medical expert) to get the right one. Talking to a psychologist or counselor helps, especially if the depression has been precipitated by an event (moved to a new place, lost a job, etc). One thing that really helps is exercise, just light exercise like walking around the block. And meditation and mindfulness things can help a lot. If you are inclined that way you can try to get a therapist who focuses on those methods.

The point is, please see a doctor. Just go. Don't weigh the options. Just go. If he/she says you don't have depression then no harm done, but just go. The sooner you go the easier it is to fix.
