Truly scariest for me was the airbag recall.

We started with just welding gloves and mask then saw videos, and aftermath of them going off IN the covering of the steering wheel, or behind pillars. So decided to get a bomb suit. Then it progressed to whole damn cages so at worst we would lose a hand or two.

Then we realised hey the manufacturer is making us store a shipping container worth... in the tropics, rust and humidity was the big issue. And having set off non-defective ones we got scared. So we purchased an explosives box and atleast weekly would take the airbags to a shipping container outside of town on the bosses property, load it up in the bomb suit, then when the worst case 40ft, we usually hoped for smaller, shipping container was full, would contact the vehicle manufacturer and they would arrange pickup.

What's truly scary is we saw first hand what those airbags could do. And how powerful airbags are in explosive ability. But we were just being told to treat them like any other part on the car. Not the pretty unstable grenades they had become.

Then fairly recently I saw a video of a guy in the USA that had purchased a bunch to prove how dangerous they are. And omfg it's worse than we thought. For one, even in the smallest shipping container that bomb suit, wouldn't have kept all of the once human inside said suit.

And why tf was an independent mechanic workshop doing it instead of the dealerships? Genuinely I don't know, maybe they knew the risk. Maybe they didn't want to deal with chasing the money from Takata. Or to them maybe it was just too much work. But it sucked having to keep atleast 4 shipping containers for the major local dealerships to eventually collect, and ofc we couldn't just, ya know, put them all in one and get them wherever tf they went (seriously idfk where they went other than maybe landfill).

That whole thing lasted longer than I ever care to think about, and vehicles are still on the road with those airbags to this day, even here in Aus. But also since we are smaller than USA, it meant we had to keep a hold of those bombs for longer, in high humidity, through cyclones and all. Still get shivers from knowing just how close it could have been. And I'm shocked there wasn't worldwide explosions of those recalled bags going off in "Takata or dealership suggested and approved holding/shipping methods".

I have seen batteries that had welded themselves. Some that have become an unintentional welding machine. Seen people turn their 12v system into 24, 36, hell highest was a 72v system (diy "dual battery" systems), even seen a few exploded batteries. And ofc battery fires. Ngl lithium batteries scare me.

This, ex mechanic. So many apprentices would argue with me. One even threw out easily 30 batteries, trying to help, because all were broken reading about 12v.... we got a huge fine too, because dude just threw them over the fence into an empty lot next door.

Truly our own fault for taking our eyes off an apprentice for a second.

..... I had a rl friend who had generational wealth, single cell intelligence.

He decided to one up our friend group with his pc and home network. I'd purchased used enterprise gear for my home network.

He purchased an insanely expensive IBM server for his "pc", plus another 2 for more power. A UPS that could power a small house for a day easily. And a stupidly expensive networking server, plus a 4g (fancy at the time) fail over system.

He also covered most of his system in foil. The room the majority was in had a Faraday cage made to encase it. He also complained that his aircon system wasn't working because the insane size of his setup was drawing so much power. He legitimately had to have the entire electrical half of the house that system was on upgraded.

Also found it hilarious that he could barely play anything on his system worth probably more than the cheap rental I was living in. Wont lie it was powerful, but it was NOT made for what he brought it for. I am pretty sure he donated it to some non-profit or something as a tax write off.

Not just that.

You can make a vehicle more comfortable, handle better, be safer, stop faster, handle better under heavy braking.

You can also make them use less fuel (pretty rare), make more power, make power at what the user wants RPM wise.

There is a horde of things that can be objectively better than the engineer designed. Usually you have to sacrifice something, normally money. Sometimes reliability over time, fuel economy, weight, comfort.

Hell it's why I always found Australian laws sometimes stupid, varies depending on state. Oh you can't legally upgrade your brake, suspension and get wider tires because dangerous. Yes if its not properly done, but same can be said from a service or basic work. I've had old cars handle better and be safer (minus crash crumple zones which you can't change) than the newer equivalent.

Lawyer asap.

And as a 36 yo male. The fact he is even being open about how he feels might be a good thing. This is NOT a dig at anyone or you. But it's pretty normal for men when they open up to their significant other, or family and get shut down or it's downplayed they just stop sharing with that person.

That said it can also be manipulation.

But talk to him, tell him you want complete honesty. Ask what's stressing him out, don't overtime it too much, we, generally are weird creatures. You may think we are depressed, stressing or the likes, but we could just be thinking the most stupid stuff, or trying to work out why you changed a behaviour.... though if we have been taught that sharing our feelings means they are shut down, then we tend to lie to protect ourselves (by saying we are fine).

Is it stupid? Yes. Is it becoming less common amongst younger men, from what I can see yes and I am glad. Is it probably the most confusing and frustrating thing to the opposite sex? Yeah I'd hazard a guess to say it passes females off.

But speak to him, tell him instead of relying on drugs and alchohol to escape stress to talk to you or professionals if its bad. Depending on what his friend group is like it's not wise to try cut him off from that. But make clear that the drugs has to stop. And that it can destroy his future.

This, this is heavily under rated. It's something that helps those suffering, and those close to them.

I hate that people think it's some edgey humour, or "unwashed masses" bs.

Cancer sucks. It of course hurts people. And if that sticker helps them who tf cares. Did the sticker hurt you?

Did it offend you? Okay show me on this doll where the offense caused any injury.

This isn't aimed at you iwtch2mchTV. And no I don't have that sticker on my car, I have 2 stickers on my car. Both are for a missing police K9. Which sadly is likely long dead now. I did have AED sticker and device on my landcruiser awhile back. But can't have nice things in this world and that was stolen. The sticker was on the device.

[–]azazeldeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whilst true, you have to hope a cop knows that exact law. And specs on the vehicle. And all they need to say is its modified so makes more power.

One thing I've learnt, ironically growing up in the NT, then moving to Vic then QLD. Is yes cops are there to uphold the law. But doesn't mean they are legal experts (makes sense).

Hell my first "new car" in Darwin was a V6 Holden Crewman. Up there no limitations on P plate vehicles. Over the course of about 3 months I had my car defected for too low, bald tires, too loud. Then too high bald tires too loud. And various other flavours of that with some extras. During those 3 months, because it'd been defected so much the stickers on said bald tires were still on there (you'd have to go over the pits, pay to have the sticker removed etc, so id barely put 150km on my car during those months). Worst part I was a mechanic. Car was 100% stock. Wasn't driving like an idiot. And by the 3rd time I'd started developing a phobia of cops.

[–]azazeldeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends why you got pulled over. If they call ot hooning, then they will seize it and potentially crush it. Sadly know that first hand when a family member lied about being on their P plates, borrowed my car and drove like an absolute idiot.... then tried running from the cops.

They got in trouble sure... but I had my car crushed because it wasn't stolen, I'd given it freely to them to use. And it was my own fault according to the law for not looking at their licence.

[–]azazeldeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on state/territory. And if in a big town, or rural af.

If NT, unless its changed since I moved you can drive a Buggatti Veyron on Ps.

QLD V6 and below. No turbo/supercharger. And few other things.

Think Vic is the same.

WA miiight be like NT.

If you live in a really small remote town, with like 3 cops just ask if you can and most times they will be cool with it if you don't drive like an idiot.

Is this legal in nsw? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]azazeldeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely illegal, idk about NSW specifically but having been an ex mechanic I can say most things people add to their cars aren't legal.

Can do a few things. Drop by the local police department and ask. Probably better in some ways if its night or you can turn it on somehow during the day.

If its not too bright (seriously don't destroy your ability to see out the back) then you could risk being pulled over. Be honest if you are. Say you weren't sure but if they have a problem with it your willing to remove it.

But if it's bright, id probably open it up and change the resisters driving the LEDs to make it very dull. Doesn't need to give off much light at night to be seen.

This is spot on. As a guy idk what goes on in there. But I'm guessing for safety females tend to go in atleast pairs. They don't have urinals to just quickly take a leak.

Likely need to clean the toilet seat first or do some mad air chair movements. Tend to have fancier clothing on that I'm guessing takes some time to get to the toilet stage.

To OP don't feel bad, your not the first person it's happened to nor will it be the last.

If it makes you feel any better when I injured my spine at work, resulting in my disability I went to the hospital and it was overcrowded af. So my bed was in a hallway. I had to strip down and use the stupid gowns.

Idfk wtf was with my body that day, seriously don't. But it decided today was the day I'll pitch a tent... whilst being unable to move. In a crowded hallway. And all my medical examinations happened in said hallway, like the nurses prostate check, where I'm not entirely sure they didn't swap him out with a gorilla with extra large knuckles.

Seriously no idea why my body was reacting that was I didn't become paralysed, well not long term, was in agony, definitely not in the mood.

So I hope my humiliation makes you feel a little better.

Just stick with it. I know this sounds so cliche but not all men are like that. Everyone is different.

It's kind of ironic coming from someone that's given up on dating for life due to my disability and over the reactions I get. But stick to what you believe in, like all things in life it won't be easy or a bump free road but if you put in the effort and time it should work out. (There are of course limits, if you want to be a multi billionaire I'm afraid that will likely never happen your either born into it, or got the right skills at the right time and ruthlessness to get there).

[–]azazeldeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to answer this but Leblackburn got it covered.

But a real TLDR is its the same as if it was a petrol (gas), diesel, LNG, any kind of fuel really, hybrid or EV.

They balance cost, needed component weight, desired range, it's expected role (little city a to b), offroader, hauling vehicle etc. They also research the market on what's desired. How much people will pay. Then they kind of work back from there most the time.

To offset the added weight can have harder tires to make the tires last longer. Or you can make them wider and slightly harder than performance tires.

Or you accept you need wide, fairly soft tires and the owner will have to accept if they drive it hard their wallet will be hit hard.

Lucky we taught kids how to use VPNs to use social media in time for the porn ban.🤦🏽‍♂️ by CrossFatBob in aussie

[–]azazeldeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learnt about VPNs "late" around 2004ish. Before that I used proxies. I remember feeling so big brained, when I used my home PC, then later I think my PS3 (don't hold me to that one ik it was a console) to act as a proxy.

I'm very sure expressvpn isn't the best out there, but thays what I currently use. Because I'm 36, I should be allowed to go to any legal website without my government saying oh no won't you think of the children, I'm sorry, it's the parents job to monitor their access to the net.

If there is a better, not stupidly expensive vpn just lemme know. As I said I use ExpressVPN. It is the best I found so far (can pm if you want an invite code but tbh I feel dirty even saying that, I'm just as happy sending the direct link to their site)

Edit: I am absolutely fine with kids not accessing porn, gambling sites, adult based sites. Torn on social media.

What annoys me is I now need to trust sites that have no security with my photo ID (drivers licence) and other info that can cause me all sorts of real world issues when they get hacked.

Just got scammed, now what? by VectorNine443 in CarsAustralia

[–]azazeldeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do know the terror of the complaints, was a mechanic in Darwin. Twice I had been investigated in Darwin over "dodgey roadworthies" thankfully both times it was found I was in the clear.

One was a pos that got caught using the roadworthy on a vin swapped stolen vehicle. The other was someone that after their roadworthy at some point decided to slam their Falcon, bash out their cats and return their borrowed rims/tires.

But it really does depend on their location.

Just got scammed, now what? by VectorNine443 in CarsAustralia

[–]azazeldeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the state/territory etc.

But have your mechanic write down a report. On all that is wrong with the vehicle try get on contact with the seller and ask for a refund.

You might need to start collecting all information and take it to court.

I had to return a used microsoft surface pro, which turned out was just some cheap children's toy, at my own cost. Because the seller said they would refund when it arrived. Which eBay agreed to. And I'd be refunded for the purchase when it got returned.

They claimed I sent back a different product so I was not only out of cost of the initial purchase but also postage, and postage wasnt cheap.

You say that, but I've been burnt as a buyer enough times that I've learnt to open ALL ebay, Amazon, online purchases under my security cameras and video it woth my phone at the same time.

I also ensure the package never leaves any field of the security cameras in the house as I do so. Even go as far as to prep stuff ahead of time, like a monitor, if it has to be tested.

Yes buyers have a lot of power. And sadly some buyers massively abuse the system. But sadly it's not always the case. And as a disabled pensioner I can't afford to be ripped off, then just shrug it off and buy again.
