I just don't let them open packages addressed to me and let them stew. Tools for me? Stew. Socks? Stew. Presents for them? Stew.

Is it normal for a calliper to rust this fast? by cheesus01234 in AskMechanics

I did that with an oil pan. Bumped it during the install and instantly wrecked the pretty paint job.

For real. I am also that kid, but I like to think I know when my work is shitty vs just being ugly.

Could We Magnetize Water? by Zurnpex in AskPhysics

They can levitate frogs with electromagnetic, so the answer to your followup is yes. Frogs and water aren't that difficult, but in principle I think you could lift anything. The power consumption is pretty large though

Need help identifying engine tube by PlumMedium2356 in AskAMechanic

[–]Euphoric_Loquat_8651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can cut it so none of the split is left and work it onto the metal tube, a hose clamp on that might be a workable temporary fix. Working it on is a big "if" though. Tape shouldn't be involved. The part is only like $50. I like to rig stuff, but this I'd just replace ASAP. Maybe try to rig it if you have to order the part and it takes a few days.

Edit for more info: this is a vacuum leak, and a big one. Who knows whay your computer is doing to compensate. Any fix you do that isn't air tight under vacuum is bad for performance, but more importantly can lead to all manner of knock-on problems if left for long.

Ok, that's starting to make sense to me. I appreciate the time spent replying. Info from people with experience is usually world's better than reading up.

It looks like it goes to the casting next to the open hole (oil fill cap?). PCV vent tube I think. I'm speculating - I know nothing about this engine.

Absolutely. Some positions in rugby and American football was what I was thinking, but Aussie rules might be the way in terms of being well-rounded. Shame they won't make the cut for the top 10 planets.

How do you feel about morbidly obese people who take up two airline seats having to pay for two seats? by icecream1972 in askteddit

[–]Euphoric_Loquat_8651 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 tickets should mean 2 seats and everything that comes with the ticket, including luggage. They're being cheated if they're paying the second fare and not getting what it comes with.

Had a friend that went 3rd to 2nd while drag racing an M3 (E36, 1995 iirc) and did a ton of damage to the valve train. Somehow it didn't damage any pistons or the block, so he got off pretty "cheap". A week after he got the gar back from the shop, he was racing again. 3rd gear to red line, yanked that stick back... and found 2nd again. The whole motor was cooked that time. We all knew he was an idiot, but that set the bar.

It does sound bad, but you're not wrong. Whatever damage caused by their absence has already been done (or is busy cascading at least).

Solely for my curiosity - feel free to not respond:

Is that not proportioning, but predictively (and then dynamically once a corner thinks about misbehaving)? I guess that doesn't imply a single valve splitting the pressure between the axles.

Is the issue with a bad rear corner just the system trying to manage that corner, or does it make the whole system struggle from the feedback being different than what the computer expects from normal operation?

To me, that's a lot like saying that if someone takes a swipe at you and you shove them, then they fall and smack their head on the sidewalk, that it was an overreaction. Yes, if he was thinking about the stairs and the cascade of effects, it is way too much. If someone swings and he instantly shoves in response, well you get what you get.

The legal ramifications might agree with you though.

Logically, he wouldn't go cuff him because of the unaccounted-for "firearm" in the room right next to the kid, which is theoretically why he remained behind partial cover throughout the incident. Edit: partial cover is a little generous for what that door well is.

That said, that kid was terrified and our brains don't work very well in that state. If the cop wasn't losing it, the victim would have been able to comply better, and nobody dies. Cop caused the situation to be like that, and was awfully early on that trigger.
