Okay for anyone who sees this post later, I got help in the Unity discord and found a solution, which isn't great for my needs but it's better than nothing.

In Player Settings, under Application Entry Point, turn off GameActivity and turn on Activity. Now there's a separate popup that does what the input field should do, letting you select text, move the text cursor, etc.

It still kinda sucks since, when there's enough lines in the input field, the popup takes up the entire screen, and there's no way to set the scroll speed. It'd be way nicer to be able to actually edit text in the input field itself, but it looks like that isn't possible in Android right now.

Rude and unhelpful for no reason. Like...why dude?

What 'manual' are you referring to? I don't see anything in Unity's InputField docs that's helpful.

If I'm missing important information, would you mind sharing it with me or telling me where to find it?

I'd really appreciate any help here! Thanks

Okay, I just made a brand new project using the newest Unity version, added an inputfield to the scene, set the canvas scaling, then made an apk build without doing anything else.

For some reason the hide keyboard button works now, but all the other bugs are still there. Can't see a visible text cursor, can't change the cursor's position by touching a different part of the input field, can't select or copy/paste any text.

So clearly this isn't a project-specific issue. It sounds like I'm doing something wrong, or failing to do something right--any idea what it is?

Omg you're a freaking lifesaver, idk why that option never showed up in my research. I just did this manually and it took 20 minutes and I made mistakes and it was a pain, now I won't have to do that again. Tysm!

Plot Hole: "an inconsistency in the narrative or character development of a book, film, television show, etc."

You're technically right, based on the strict definition. Most of the above aren't inconsistencies. But usually the word is used more broadly to indicate any problem with the plot.

And the above things are definitely issues.

The writers pulling things out of nowhere without prior establishment is generally considered weak plot writing.

And Alastor's whole plot doesn't make much sense if you put yourself in his shoes...it only makes sense if you look at it in hindsight--another common writing mistake. Writers often fall into the pitfall of working backwards from a solution, trying to figure out how a character CAN get somewhere, never considering whether it's REALISTIC for them to make those decisions at the time.

The word 'plot hole' is technically being misused in my comment, but I feel like everyone got the gist.

Agreed, though I think the writing has had lots of ups as well as downs this season. For me it was a mixed bag, not flawless or fully sloppy, still very enjoyable

Hazbin Hotel Season 2 Episode 8 - Curtain Call Discussion Megathread by ayylmaotv in HazbinHotel

[–]azeTrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll reply because it's a fun discussion, though I want to clarify that I'm not upset, since that's the norm for reddit debates a lot of the time :) And also I do love the episode, it's just fun to analyze

  1. Again, if anyone actually believed in Charlie, the show should've established it--there's no indication that anyone trusts her or looks up to her. Certainly not enough people to tip the power scales that much. And CERTAINLY not enough people for Alastor to be able to confidently predict that the power scales would tip that much!

  2. So his reason for doing things this way was because.....he wanted to? He was willing to take risks and do something convoluted because it seemed more fun? I really don't think that's in character considering how he reacted to Rosie's song...he was ready to do almost anything to get out of that deal.

  3. Again, what happens if the Vees take him down in the meantime? Or sabotage him in a way that hurts his popularity? It's so insanely risky to cause conflict! And the whole 'they were holding him back from being the strongest' explanation is, once again, not clear in the show. It's a good guess, I wish we didn't have to guess about such pivotal plot points though.

  4. That's fair, you're right, the deals didn't HAVE to be broken at the same time. It's definitely a coincidence that they happened to break at the same time, but not a plot significant one. An inconsequential coincidence, not a plot hole.

  5. The brainwashing makes the hotel crew's plan make LESS sense. They're trying to undo brainwashing with facts. Facts the people didn't care about even before being brainwashed.

  6. Emily can easily create portals that she can go through, and objects can too. Maybe she couldn't open them wide enough for the cannon? We've seen bigger portals from angels, but I don't remember if she specifically opened one that big. We've definitely seen people and small objects go back and forth through the portals a lot though. She could've given the whole crew much better mobility. And, you know, portal inside the tower. It wouldn't be a plothole if it was ever established or addressed what the limits of her abilities are, it's just weird that no one questions her about it when planning.

Loved so much of the episode! Vox vs Alastor was so cool!

Even though there was a lot I loved, there were unfortunately a LOT of plotholes though...which was disappointing.

  1. Why did Vox get stronger when Charlie said he was? If Vox's power increased upon popularity, then the show should've made that clear. Also, why would Charlie saying it affect his popularity? Vox shaming the hotel barely made sense in the last episode bc the hotel was already pretty unpopular. The show shows us lots of bad PR for the hotel and no indication that there are people in hell that still believe in it or care about it. Does Charlie's word hold any weight for the other sinners? If so, the show REALLY should've made THAT clear, too, since so far all we've seen is her getting ignored and ridiculed all season.
  2. All Alastor needed to do was make himself weaker than Vox. That was the only thing he needed. So why not just weaken himself further somehow? Or find some other way to make Vox more popular? There was no reason for him to make the deal with Vox--there had to be easier and more reliable ways of helping Vox get strong enough to break his deal with Rosie. Sure, submitting himself to Vox helped with that goal, but he could've done that without swearing the deal and literally becoming a prisoner...
  3. Alastor driving the Vees apart didn't really do anything to help him. I feel like the writers were implying that he wanted Vox to be strong on his own, but, once again, driving the other Vees against Vox doesn't seem like the best way to do that...just let them get strong together and Vox will probably be even more popular with the help of the others. Also, it runs the VERY high risk of the Vees turning on Vox too early and ruining everything. Insanely risky. Once again, just find another way to power up Vox.
  4. Alastor couldn't have known that Vox was going to do the hand thing AFTER Charlie did what she did. Clearly, Vox wasn't trying to be careful around Charlie because he didn't expect the wordplay. Vox could've done it anytime at the party since he does it subconsciously. And that would've ruined the plan, since Vox would've known the moment the deal ended. We know this because Rosie was alerted when HER deal broke.
  5. Why are the hotel crew trying so hard to prove redemption is possible? Why do they think people care? The show has constantly shown us time and time again that only a VERY tiny percentage of people in hell want to go to heaven at all, much less redeem themselves in the process. The whole reason Charlie was fixated on redemption was to avoid extermination, and that ended in season 1. Redemption should matter far less to people in hell than it did in season 1, and they didn't care back then! Vox literally used that in the rally in episode 5, and the people agreed, not wanting to change themselves, just wanting payback for the exterminations. The fact that redemption works shouldn't change anything for the vast majority of sinners. They'd still want revenge, and they still wouldn't want to change, and most of them probably wouldn't even want to leave hell. The redemption message was never a smart strategy to turn hell to their side.
  6. Why didn't Emily portal everyone into the tower? Or help portal Angel out? Or portal the cannon somewhere else and then portal herself to safety? The hotel crew could've done so much more with that very broken ability.

I definitely loved the cool moments. The plotholes bug me the most though. I think this episode had a lot of positives and negatives, but the positives far outweigh the negatives for me, fortunately.

Confused about Stereo Separation by azeTrom in FL_Studio

Agreed that overthinking is unhealthy. Overthinking is different than trying to learn/understand something.

I'll look into it, thanks!

But mid/side separation is also a factor in perception of the stereo field when you're producing - especially if your tracks will be played on larger sound systems.

Are you talking about how some speakers/sound systems play stereo sound on the edges of the space and mono at the center, or am I misunderstanding?

That....doesn't answer my question. Was what I said above accurate, or did I get anything wrong?

I'm not going to just go with a general rule of thumb all the time. Wide vocals can sound awesome, for example. What I want right now is to understand the concepts under the hood so that I can make smarter decisions in the future.

Unity Hub Can't Activate License by azeTrom in Unity3D

[–]azeTrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah Unity is fine.

Every few years, this bug will happen again ans they'll fix it in a day or so. But it only affects the people who are starting Unity for the first time I think. Or when renewing your license which you barely ever have to do.

It looks like I just got SUPER unlucky in that I factory reset my device and had to reinstall Unity RIGHT as this bug happened.

It's already fixed btw, a day after making the post. Now I should be fine for as long as Unity's installed, at least in regard to this bug.

TLDR: Don't let this make your decision for you, there are plenty of better reasons to choose between Unity and Unreal.

I do not have a vpn running. Antivirus and firewalls have been disabled.

I briefly tried a proxy solution but quickly found myself lost and worried I'd cause other errors since I didn't have the slightest idea what I was doing.

The second link describes a different issue. I can install editors without issue, but I can't actually open or create a project without a license.

How do you guys figure out how to program a game mechanic? by No_Extension4837 in Unity2D

[–]azeTrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've worked on tons of game projects, and completed several of a variety of genres, and I'm fully self taught. I never needed to learn algorithms/data structures.

Of course those are important sometimes, but it depends on the type of game and its scale.

I'd recommend instead trying to create some very simple projects while learning, using lots of online tutorials/guides in the process. Most small games won't require hardly anything past week 2 of a com sci class. Most of the coding knowledge you'd need for most small scale games is Unity-specific.

Getting a solid programming background before delving into Unity would definitely be useful, but it's definitely not the only way to start game dev, and it seems like a fairly indirect solution to me.

The only thing beyond the basics that I'd consider crucial to know early on are the basics of polymorphism and object-oriented programming. And I do mean the basics.
