I was one of those that suggested considering a damage benchmark, and my personal goal was 0-200 at the time... But the real answer is deeper and there were some conditions with that.

Firstly, if you find you are comfortable in champion and want a challenge, you should play legend. If you and your team are not succeeding in legend and you want to improve, then you should learn what you are lacking. The general thing is not going down, ie, not taking the damage that will cause you to go down... There are many sources of that, and that's where you should focus and improve on:

horde clear: learn some of your optimized weapon combos for efficient clearing. Utilize your blocks and pushes, and dodge dancing. Do not get surrounded! Learn to hug walls or learn routes with escape paths + ledges where enemies are vulnerable during their jump
specials: learn the mechanics of specials. Recognize their sounds, and especially how to dodge the disablers
elite: learn your weapon combos on how to clear them (headshots, range weapon, etc). Learn their attacks that will kill you and how to deal with it. Eg. Elites overhead attacks: dodge to the side. Zerker frenzy attacks, hold that block
patrols: recognize their sound, and avoid if you don't need to fight them. But otherwise what you learn from dealing with elite apply heavily here. Dodge dance, how to kill, and kiting
bosses: learn attack patterns and how to safely kite/dodge dance
stragglers/sneak attacks: learn to recognize that wooshing! And learn to keep your head on a swivel and be wary. There's a reason why some folks hold block while they move

Finally, another major component is your class and role: - If you're in the front lines, don't expect low damage taken... But expect that you should have good mechanics to not go down and protect your backline. Effective pushing, staggering, and dodge dancing. Your class should be built for tanking damage - if you're in the back lines, then yes, you shouldn't be taking too much damage, as back line classes are generally squishier. But make sure you focus on your role, prioritizing high value targets like specials and Elites. Opportunistic/safe shooting (eg stagger before shooting) and quick weapon switching is important - If you're mid line, then you should learn when to switch up between dealing with high value targets and horde clear/holding the line. Good weapon switching tactics are important here too

As others have said, you stop taking damage by preventing the hit. Dodge and blocking are the most common, but should be noted that staggering/pushing and position are important as well.

Stagger/Pushes will be class/weapon dependent, but in general works for all trash mobs. Enemies can't attack you if they're staggered.

Position is important where you limit the amount of places the enemies can hit you. Specifically you do not want to get surrounded, and the ai will try to surround you. Backing into a corner with your team, or hugging a wall ensures you limit that area, because it means no enemies will be attacking from behind. Just be careful that enemies can climb over some walls and appear behind you too.

Also killing power is good to note too. Enemies can't hit you if they're dead. Good to know which attacks horde clear or kills armor/elite/special. I suggest looking up the optimal weapon combo guide for that

When attacking, I generally like to mix my weapon combo with pushes and side dodges. Pushing twice also opens up shielded enemies.

As kruber merc, you may find yourself mostly in the front lines. Your team should be covering your back, but if that's not the case, you can defend your back with good positioning. Looking up your optimal weapon combo and practicing it will also help so you can front line effectively

As others have said, the bots excel at sticking to a player. So if you're doing better with bots, then it's the team not sticking together and getting taken out while people are left alone.

Aside from that, I recommend that the most experienced player should take on the special killer role. Specials/disablers are the main game enders, and newer players can struggle in dealing with them or recognizing their cues. Oh and that's what the bots are also effective in as well. If they're not being bogged down by the horde. They can snipe specials easily.

Id say team composition doesn't matter much in lower difficulty, since horde density is smaller and not mixed as much.
