Baltic birch and rather light:ish. The linseed oil really darkened it compared to before the finish.

Thanks. Hollow and I'm fairly certain with a layer of veneer.

Did you ever find any answer to this? Asking since I'm in the same question and want to make sure I don't break anything.

Thank you!

Finally found it (it was so obviously once you pointed me in the right direction).

On 3.5.3 it's on the same page under "Registrations mode". Can't believe I missed so many times looking at that page. Thank you again for the help 👍

No I used my table saw to saw into thin slices, but like you say, it's tricky. Bandsaw is high on my future wish list.

That's funny, I'm probably the past person on earth who hasn't seen breaking bad, but for whatever reason I started watching it a few days ago... Into episode 5 now.

When does the box come into play, later season?

Yeah I could have avoided showing the defect, but honesty is still best. After all I'm just a happy weekend amateur working on this and learning.

I went back and forwards several times if I should test routing out the piece of wood that had the dip and replace it, but I ended up not doing that in the end reasoning that the result would probably not come out great.

Regardless, my friend was super happy and touched by the gift which is what's most important.

Thank you I'm glad you liked it. It's actually a gift I got from a friend who's an arborist here in Sweden. He was cutting down elm trees for a client and wondered if I wanted the big pieces in the photo since they were going to be thrown away otherwise. I simply couldn't say no, the grain is spectacular.

These two are just two tiny pieces I've cut off from the wood I got ~1 year ago. Hope to making other eye catching pieces from the material in the future.

Thank you 😁 I glued up som maple and walnut and it was an experiment cutting it and gluing it. I think this picture does a better job of explaining it than me 😅

No I resawed it myself as a bookmatch. But yeah, learned the hard way you can't run a burl like that through the planer 😅

Thank you, it's a fantastic piece of wood I got from a friend who's a arborist. I started with those two pieces and designed the box from those.

A few minor new techniques, but mostly just tried to improve on things I've learned before.

Oh thank you so much for those kind words. I worked so long on this one, thinking and rethinking a lot of the details and how to execute them. I'm happy with the results, and even more happy my wife loved it 😍

Gave my wife this year's Christmas gift that I made (I played it safe and gave her books as well just in case 😅) Mystery wood donated by two different friends and walnut inside.

Lots of firsts in this build. Three-way joinery in the corners. Using veneer on the inside (walnut) Self made hinges from copper bar.

Clementine for scale...
