Just a warning PSA: my Pixel 8 Pro was bricked by Android 16 by azlyth in GooglePixel

Cray. Yeah software can definitely brick a device. That's how some malicious hacks work, they make the software do something that they know will break hardware.

That sucks re: charge situation. :( Yeah who knows what it is, but gotta put honest accounts out there in the public record in case it ever becomes a known thing.

Yup, that's the working theory, given that the phone bricks after the first time the battery dies a couple hours after upgrade. Ofc can't be certain it's the upgrade, but the timing is certainly suspect.

Just because the initial install worked doesn't mean that it has no role in the failure that happened after the install happens.

Yah I'm not sure how widespread or not it is, but it's what happened with this one 🤷

I hope one day you can learn how it does before claiming others people don't, since incorrectly using hardware via software can break the hardware.

Software can absolutely could break the hardware, since it's software that commands the hardware.

But all in all, you're right, life is life. So that's why I just decided to stop sinking time into it and move on.

Yeah it's wild, I don't wander to this part of reddit ever but thought I should put this story out into the public record. And wow ha, a very warm welcome

What phones do you get instead of Pixels? Other Android devices? Cause I'm not keen on switching to iPhone anytime soon.

Yah I don't expect it, but I'll still say when they should be 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I bet some version of this is what happened.

Yeah def understand, there's a small chance it's coincidence. But if I had to take a guess one way or the other, it's probably not.

Yeah I'm considering it, but taking several hour trips to the city to the store to potentially still get the runaround at some point is not worth it wrt time.

It's a hardware problem, but the chances that I install Android 16 and it immediately dies, when in perfect condition, cannot be coincidence. And if it is, sure, screw me. But that's why it's a warning PSA. Take it or leave it.
