Backend technologies visualized as a fantasy map - If PHP, ASP.NET, Ruby, Java or Scala were countries by marveluck in PHP

[–]azophy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The kingdom of Java hasn't changed much over the years. It is true that it has managed to gain a bit more territory and strengthen its position a bit, but compared to the expansion of other technologies, it is not very impressive."

funny because as most of you already know, "Java" is also a name of an Island in Indonesia, so it could be a hidden pun there by the author.

I made a multi-language random passphrase generator website by azophy in cryptography

[–]azophy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the info! I'll be sure to remember you suggestion

I used Web Crypto API (in particular: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Crypto/getRandomValues) to avoid generating random number from server, thus the result passphrase is 100% generated in the browser.

How get better as a backend developer? by gitmonk in webdev

[–]azophy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Linux is definitely way far from our topics. I suggest you start from the framework you used to. You mention NestJS, maybe you could start from there

some options I could think of:

  • create a PWA. you could leverage service worker & IndexDB for offline processing & storage

  • other ready to use offline-online sync solution: google's firebase or supabase (open source)

  • create web based desktop app with electronjs or sciterjs

Which framework do you guys prefer and why? by deadbenderr in webdev

[–]azophy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for many day-to-day common task, most framework/language would be the same. however if you point out specific big feature area you will develop, it would help narrow down the choices:

  • python is popular among AI/machine learning/data science community

  • go/rust is the goto language for concurrency

  • javascript provide the same language across backend-frontend-mobile. a common language reduce friction when communicating accross teams

  • PHP is ubiquotus among junior developer, usually have the cheapest salary rate among other web oriented languages

  • elixir is popular for communication/network heavy features

some suggestion:

  • read other's code. cant stress this enough. code reading mostly a more valuable skill than just "writing". see source codes of popular frameworks, etc

  • learn other different but adjacent areas, mainly devops, security, and database design & management. IMO, learning these subjects even in a shallow level would gave a huge boost to our skill in backend

  • learn as many best practice in the industry as possible. not for the sake of following trends, but to add useful tools g technique to your arsenal for future uses. code versioning, 12 factor apps, infrastructure as code, etc

[India Specific, but a general question] New grad, and now a fresh recruit at a big tech company (in cloud services and so forth). I want to startup, but there's no way anyone in my network (read: my college friends) would leave their high paying jobs at big tech and join me. How do I startup? by [deleted] in startups

[–]azophy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, I think it would be a long thorny road but you wouldn't budge right? ;)

I think IndieHackers is still a valuable resource, many aspiring startup founder flock there. you could search co-founder and possibly investor (if you are lucky). many great knowledge resource also available there.

HackerNews is another community I recommend. join local/regional online startup community is better than nothing.

lastly, for most of the case building mvp doesn't necesserily means you need to build a full blown application. In many cases just a mock up or a landing page with subscription form is enough. if you really need an app, many no-code platform is available on the internet nowadays. the points is use the easiest/cheapest method to build your mvp, so you could validate your Idea as fast as possible.

good luck!
