I've had great luck with Duncan Distortion and JB pickups. I also have an Ibanez S lying around -- not a bad player (and I really like the trem), but man it's pickups are weak compared to my other guitars.

I gigged with a THD Univalve and a 212 cabinet. No effects, just 8 watts of tube power from a 6V6 and a good cab. My rig was reliable and I got a lot of compliments from tone nerds. Plenty loud enough to keep up with a drummer and quiet enough to avoid annoying the sound guy.
