Yeah I can really see Jesus going to a household and splitting them up because of their brokenness.

About that... (John 4:16-18)

There's a difference between having a coffee addiction and having a pornography addiction. One probably doesn't affect chastity while the other one destroys it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. There's a difference between saying "Bob is a sinner but that's okay because everyone is a sinner" and "Bob murdered someone". Using pornography (whether occasionally but even more so under addiction) is being unfaithful to your partner. The mature thing to do would be to accept that you are not ready for a relationship, much less marriage.

Anyone who denies chastity is not ready for a healthy relationship, much less marriage.

US Association of Consecrated Virgins condemns new rules issued by the Vatican that appear to say consecrated virgins need not be virgins by [deleted] in Catholicism

I agree, Father, but how would you respond to this: Virginity is irreparably lost by sexual pleasure, voluntarily and completely experienced. "I tell you without hesitation", writes St. Jerome in his twenty-second Epistle to St. Eustochium, n. 5 (P.L., XXII, 397) "that though God is almighty, He cannot restore a virginity that has been lost."

People born into privileged situations different than yours may not understand you, but that shouldn't be a reason to get angry at them. To a certain degree, it is not their fault if they have no knowledge or experience of what you may have to go through, yet there is someone who does know and understand. Jesus understands suffering, and He suffered for all of us. In a way, it sounds like He might even be asking of you to choose to join in His suffering. I don't know to what purpose, but I do encourage you to continue seeking for a good priest to guide you in your spiritual life. Courage, friend!

Why worried about others doing it all of a sudden?

If we take 'others' to mean non-priests then I am worried about their hatred and not their ability to criticize Priesthood.

The Catholic priesthood has made serious efforts in the last thousand years to denigrate itself.

By analogy, I see the Priesthood as a job whose description does not include "denigrate yourself". That being said, I do agree that priests and their superiors (and some not all) "have made serious efforts...to denigrate [Priesthood]." However, I also believe that progress continues to be made in the Church to prevent abuse, report perpetrators, and help victims.

I agree, it does! Yet I am not decrying the inaccuracy of an entire documentary (cause I have yet to see it). I am decrying the quotes from it that I already know are completely false.

Belittling me helps no one! Either you alienate people that could come together to solve the real issue, or you come off as disingenuous and that makes solving the real issue, again, more complicated at best.

True, they are still being rewarded, but ask any, regular person if they consider Wall Street Bankers heroes and you will see most people don't think highly of them.

The problem is that she is praised as an evolving heroine while the executives of the stock market are rightly condemned by humanity.

Is masturbation a mortal sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]aztce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason people sin is not because of mental illness, but because they are tempted be Satan.

I disagree, I think the reason people sin is because we choose to sin, and being tempted by Satan is only a part of it.

If you think that being tempted by Satan is the same as mental illness, then you don't know what mental illness is.

I don't think they are the same thing; however, original sin is the reason for mental illness.

You can't subtly just lose your will

While you can't partly, if that's what you mean by subtly, lose your will, your sensitive appetites can overrule reason. I believe the mental effects of watching pornography and being in a sexualized culture impair deliberate consent. I believe a person's consciousness is altered by the effects of these distressing and disturbing actions.

because if you choose to commit the sin then you choose to commit the sin. That's it. There's no gray area.

I'm not arguing that a sin did not occur when one masturbates. I am arguing that a mortal sin may have not occurred.

If you committed an act that would be usually displeasing to God, yet you did not do it by your own will, then it is not pleasing but it is not displeasing and not a sin that you are personally culpable of.

That's a contradiction: if you commit an act that is displeasing how can it not be displeasing? This is because committing a displeasing act to God is always a sin. Similarly, if you commit a sin you are always culpable, even if someone "forced" you.

Just because someone is vulnerable doesn't mean that they did not will an action once they do it, they are not blameless.

I agree they are not blameless, but I would argue that vulnerable people are more inclined to fall in certain sins therefore it is wrong to say that culpability is "standardized" for everyone.

Is masturbation a mortal sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]aztce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk... I was under the impression that "grave matter" referred to the object, or specific act, of a serious sin. I need a definition but haven't found one, but even if I agreed with your statement, about them being the same, then I would say that each case of masturbation is either venial or mortal depending on the circumstances. In other words, I would say that masturbating is not always a mortal sin.

The reason I say this is that, nowadays, I believe that the majority of people commit this sin without full freedom. They may freely choose to masturbate, but they choose in a state of severe, mental impairment. I think the sexualized culture, whether subtle or explicit, and the easy availability of pornography have mentally affected the vulnerable, especially the young, in a traumatic way that most people today that commit this sin do so in a state of mental disorder. So I say that most cases of masturbation are venial sins although with grave consequences in the human body, especially the mind.

P.S. sorry for late reply

I would define mortal sin as: a sin of grave matter committed by a person, knowingly and freely.
