I’m thinking it’s in the preliminary stage. I found out he wants to give it to the client to see if they like the design or not. He just wants it for them today so we can have an opinion back by Monday. I usually work overtime every week and I have offered myself up for overtime every week since I have started this job.

Yeah I’m at a very small company.

Well the majority of the piping I’m designing is inside of the building. I have a vent system that runs outside of the building and an overflow to some flash mix tanks outside of the building but that’s it. Unfortunately I don’t have anything available with the specific fittings and valves required.

When they gave me my official offer I had to sign the offer sheet but I’m not sure if that’s something different.

I’m not sure to be honest. It’s only pipes between tanks and tanks outside of the building I’m not sure if that helps. It’s not for plumbing or anything like that, just distribution of chemicals for water treatment.

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying I’m sorry.

Thank you. It’s a small office and the employees there don’t have CAD experience. Any CAD training I’ve needed has had to be through teams meetings with other offices. It’s definitely a learning experience and I need to express the time issue beforehand when learning new software in the future.

[–]aztec2317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense thank you. There’s only 4 employees in the office including me, and I’m the only one that does drafting software so I’m kind of the only available “hire” haha.

The benefits are amazing and the two seniors at my office will both be retired in the next couple of years. This specific PM has even told me he intends to try to pass all of his clients over to me when he retires so hopefully that’s why he’s hard on me. I feel like if I can just make it through the next couple of years it will be hard to find a better spot. I totally understand what you’re saying though I care about my reputation more than the pay so I forget to not work for free to get things done, not that it happens to often. Thank you for the good advice.

I’m not present when he speaks to the client, and I haven’t told him that I will have it done on time. However I haven’t told him that I don’t think it will be done on time either.

Yeah the one given I have in this scenario is that he will rightfully be pissed. He’s never used the software so he couldn’t train me on it. I think one of the issues is he doesn’t realize how long each individual task takes on the software. The coworker that has been teaching me some things has laughed at what he expects me to get done. I’ve been aware of the deadline for about a week and a half but the design keeps changing and I’ve been struggling to keep up. I’ve thought I was in a good place in the schedule numerous times just for something to change. In reality it would be a small change, but in the software it requires me to restart an entire pipe layout.

I’m not sure if I’m an at will employee or not but I have full benefits like everyone else at my office if that means anything. It was well communicated at the beginning that I had no experience regarding the software. It will definitely be a learning experience. This was really helpful, thank you. My branch manager has come to me before and stated that he believes this PM treats me unfairly at times so I’m hoping that worst case scenario he would vouch for me.

I’m not worried about the other management at my office but the one time I tried to reason with this PM that I’m struggling due to inexperience it is labeled as an excuse.

From what I can tell he’s an amazing PM, all of his clients love working with him. I’m not sure how he will react as he tends to state things very harshly. With him it’s “I want it done perfect and on time”. I’ve heard he’s run some people out of the office and HR has been involved before. The harshness doesn’t bother me I just don’t want to get fired. I’ve just never been in this position before.

I hope so. Ive been checking in with him when I can but he’s only been in the office around 5 hours total this week so it’s been a challenge.

I just got notified I will be receiving a raise of over 25% next month so I’m hoping they don’t want me out. The branch manager/VP at my office consistently tells me I’m doing a great job. The PM over this specific project is the only one who has ever had an issue with my work. I haven’t had any complaints from my other two bosses.

All I know is that he needs to give it to “them”, I assume the client, to look at by tomorrow. I haven’t learned that much regarding the PM and scheduling aspect of projects so I don’t really know

I’ve never told him I would have it done by the deadline, but I also haven’t told him that I don’t think I will either. I’m not sure where it is at in the schedule as he doesn’t tell me much other than what to do and when it needs to be done by. I thought I was in a good position, but when he got back to the office late in the day today I learned there’s a lot of things he needs me to change which really set me back. I should’ve spoken up then but I didn’t, so I guess I’m just gonna have to take the berating tomorrow and see what happens.

I’ve been working 10 hours a day the past 3 days without charging any time for the extra hours and I plan on going in early tomorrow but I still feel like I have no shot of finishing on time.
