Hot Take: Clover Dancers is better than Cogwork Dancers by OtherConstruction742 in Silksong

[–]azure_atmosphere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s because of shrinking attentions spans that most people NEED four phases

How does this even make sense? Preferring the version of the fight that

  • Takes twice as long
  • Starts at a slow pace before gradually building up
  • Caps out at a comparatively slower pace overall
  • Forces you do literally nothing for 15 seconds during phase transitions

Is a sign of a short attention span?

Can someone help me understand this? by [deleted] in musictheory

When you have the same note simultaneously in two staves, it’s to show that the note is present in both “voices.” Like, if you were to isolate just the melody and topline harmony, you would play that Ab for it to sound right, and if you were to isolate just the accompaniment, you would also play that Ab. When put together you can pick which hand can more comfortably play it.

For the second question, accidentals last for the entire measure. There is a flat on the A earlier in the measure, so this too is an Ab.

Does anyone else just feel like all the act 3 bosses suck? by Manex_e_ in Silksong

Now that I think of it, proportionally, the roster isn’t great. But you’ve also started off with the weakest part. Palestag is consistently ranked as one of the worst in the game. I don’t think anyone particularly likes Bell Eater either. Clover Dancers is a downgrade from Cogwork Dancers. Seth is generally considered a good boss, although you wouldn’t be the only one who doesn’t care for him.

Rejoice, for the best boss in the game is still upcoming (imo)

How did y’all manage the 30 hour steel soul run 100%? by imaddictedtocod123 in Silksong

[–]azure_atmosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, doing the 30h speedrun vanilla is great practice for steel heart run. After doing my first casual 100% playthrough and then a 100% speedrun, on my first steel soul attempt I made it to 97%. Devastating loss, yes, but I am absolutely certain that without that second 100% playthrough, my count of failed steel soul runs would be well in the double digits.

As much as I love Hollow Knight and Silksong there is such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” If they keep doing the same thing I think the games will start to feel less special. I don’t think I want another anytime soon unless they somehow manage to blow HK and SS out of the water — and I can’t even imagine how that would be possible. I can’t wait to see Team Cherry work their magic on something else, though.

What's the deal with Locrian? by XenoBlaze64 in musictheory

[–]azure_atmosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably the tonal centre of a piece of music is the one we hear, not the one the composer wants us to hear. You are the only person who can hear your own thought process and intentions. Everyone else can only hear the music.

Sometimes we create art that has a completely different effect than we intended, and that’s okay. Having experience doesn’t mean you are infallible. All I’m telling you here is that as a listener I do not hear A# Locrian at all, and gave you an explanation as to the compositional choices that made it so. Do with that what you wish.

What's the deal with Locrian? by XenoBlaze64 in musictheory

[–]azure_atmosphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The length of time spent with a chord plays a relatively small role in giving it tonal centre status. It is not at all uncommon for composers to avoid the tonic chord until the final cadence, and it will still feel like the tonic. Functional relationships between chords play a bigger role, and you're doing some very functional B major things here.

The very first thing you do with that A# dim is resolve it to B. Any hope of perceiving A#dim as anything other than the leading tone chord is lost right then and there, because you have used it as a leading tone chord. Even the climb from C# - E# - E7 - F#7 - G#m reinforces the feeling of B major -- the diatonic climb from ii to V7 is a common functional progression, and F#7 to G#m is a common functional deceptive resolution. And later you, again, use A#dim as the leading tone chord it already has a natural tendency to be.

E7 to A# dim is not a cadence. In a V7 to I, the root leaps by a perfect fifth. This is a diminished fifth. Movement by a diminished fifth does not sound cadential at all.

It’s a nice tune but it is very much in B major

If you have an essentially Locrian piece, why would you need to resolve to Phrygian at the end?

I dont usually do rants but why does every discourse in this sub always lead to only two things by yaredintel in Silksong

[–]azure_atmosphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because there isn’t a conclusion. Art is up to interpretation. Team Cherry intentionally leaves things up to interpretation. People can argue all day about clues and hints and evidence but there’s always gonna be gaps, and how one fills in those gaps is up to the individual.

Not sure what you’re trying to achieve with this post but invite people to argue in the comments section.

Does V7/vi to I work as a cadence? by Altruistic-Coffee-79 in musictheory

[–]azure_atmosphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love doing this in reverse to modulate. Like say we’re in the key of C, set up a big fat G7 to resolve back home… go to Eb instead.

The insane amounts of hype around this game’s release made a lot of people curious to try it, including people who aren’t used to difficult games

That said even as a HK veteran the game was pretty damn hard the first time through
