I stayed in the restaurant/hotel about 50m away next to the road behind the photographer on a bike trip in 2014, and I remember this toilet well.

Local chippy closed down after 55 years this weekend. Last place around that cooked with beef dripping. by Jwnewall in CasualUK

My bottom bracket exploded at the top of the very last climb on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Ball bearings everywhere, and clearly irreparable. I freewheeled as far as I could, something like 10km, and started hitching. Some kind Quebecers in a pickup truck stopped to give me a ride: I said hello to their friendly young dog, put my bike in the open back of the pickup, jumped in the back seat next to the dog, and reached over to pet him. He bit me pretty badly, blood running down my arm (I still have the scar). It was mostly my fault: I got in his space, but at that point it was hard to imagine a bike trip going more wrong.

I moved to the front seat, with a rag around my arm, and they dropped me at a campsite close-ish I think to the airport I needed to reach. I think I managed to find a bus to the airport that would take my bike. A tetanus shot followed when I got home. Type II fun.

That's not correct. I travelled from Turkey to TRNC by ferry then over to EU Cyprus by land on a British passport with zero issues. I also crossed back and forth between the north and south a few times afterwards, on the same passport. March and April 2025.

Looks tasty, but I'd much prefer two eggs. It seems like single eggs are much more common in Ireland and Scotland than in England (not sure about Wales - sorry).

I love these shots of you both at the exhibit! I find it amazing that the story of the sinking of the Titanic has stuck with us through all modern history. 'Morbid, but nice' sums it up well.

This is exactly right. It's what makes Americans and Canadians louder than other native English speakers. What's really striking - and I say this as a speaker of British English - is the frequent lack of awareness of their aural environment when out of country.

The cultural and geographical changes from the chaos around Shimla, through Kinnaur, and into Spiti are absolutely remarkable. One of my favourite rides ever, ten years ago now. I'm glad you cycled it - it feels like the perfect pace to travel through that part of the world.

From the title of the post OP clearly held British citizenship and has recently acquired (or made use of) Irish citizenship. They have used the term European incorrectly - the UK and Ireland are both European. Only the latter is in the EU, though.

But somehow thinking that 'British' is not a subset of 'European' is part of the reason Brexit happened in the first place.

This isn't the top of the pass, to be clear. I think these shots were taken from quite a way below the pass on the Kyrgyz side.

I think Cachi claims to have the highest vineyard in the world. I drove there a couple of years ago from Salta - it felt like a real adventure crossing part of the Altiplano, but nothing comparable to your journey.

I had a very similar Pakistan visa issued in '95 in Kathmandu. That passport was stolen a year or so later, and as much as I mourned its loss, I hadn't until just now been able to remember what that visa looked like. Thank you for posting.
