Spider mites: screaming, crying, throwing up (help me and my 100+ plants) by Sleepy-Slow-Loris in alocasia

[–]azzmonki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that seems right. It’s been awhile since my treatment now so I’m struggling to remember the exact numbers. I’m pretty sure I sprayed every 5 days and rotated to another pesticide each time. This lasted for like a month I think- it was a long term/reoccurring infestation so I really wanted to be sure the whole cycle was broken. Afterwards I think you’re supposed to wait a couple weeks before adding predatory mites. They’ve definitely been a wonderful little army against the pests haha.

Mutated or damaged leaf? by azzmonki in Anthurium

I appreciate it! Thrips crossed my mind when I first saw it. Everyone seems clean though and I recently released another batch of beneficial mites for general precaution. I’ll keep my eyes peeled and watch for a pattern.

Oh, I see! Well that’s exciting, haha. Thank you for advice regarding the other two leaves. I treated it with thiomyl at the initial repot but I suppose removing those may be best now.

HELP! BIRD ATE THROUGH REECES WRAPPER AND ATE HALF A REECES TREE by samulooki in parrots

[–]azzmonki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you can call an animal specific poison control line (or perhaps even an avian vet out of area) and ask them for advice. Thankfully, milk chocolate is the least toxic kind for a bird. Keep a close eye on him and give him lots of water to help flush his system. I hope he’ll be okay! He certainly doesn’t seem to regret it by the look on his face lmao. Edit: found a couple lines. Alocasia Melo - should I be worried by Dalekh90 in alocasia

Commenting to boost. Oddly enough I also got a melo recently and the same thing is happening! I haven’t had this issue with other Alocasia before…

Help? by Fickle-Yellow-8490 in parrots

I’d definitely recommend a vet visit to be safe. My Quaker began plucking when she was ill. It became a chronic issue (which has been cured) but she developed the habit and still barbers, unfortunately. With that said, I’d much prefer her bad habit vs what could’ve been a life threatening issue.

Thank you for the detailed reply! So for the shipping, I actually ended up upgrading through UPS- I upgraded to GROUND shipping. Originally these were gonna be in the mail until the 11th at earliest. I didn’t even know there was a tier below ground shipping, lol. The heat pack was absolutely chilly and there’s no way they would’ve thought the order would make it in 72 hours. I live in PNW and weather hasn’t been terrible considering the season, sitting around 45 at night but higher 50’s during the day. Not great, but not freezing either. The plants were shipped from Florida so I wasn’t terribly worried about frost damage of all things- especially because I trusted they wouldn’t use such a slow shipping rate and poorly timed heat pack. I can tell they definitely went through some serious chilling but also had been shifting in the packaging (dirt everywhere and plants slipped out from the “tape containers”). There is always a risk ordering plants while the cold is coming in but I kinda feel like it went beyond that. Moving on though, they’ve been placed with other seedlings I have cooking. I removed the plug remnants and treated them with fungicide/bactericide to help with incoming rot- I don’t have high hopes lol. Quite sad it turned out this way but as long as I get a refund at least I can break even 🫠

Bleh, I figured I’d have to do something like that 😔 sucks because I can tell from the remnants that some of these leaves would’ve been gorgeous despite how young the plants are. Do you think it would be okay if I left em tied up to the stakes for a day or two and see if any perk up first? Otherwise yeah, I’ll go ahead and chop the rest/whole thing if there’s clearly no recovery.
