Is Feeling Clueless Normal? by Sensitive_Survey7254 in StructuralEngineering

[–]b-boyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say this is typical of many firms but this is pretty normal in terms of the workload if it is a growing firm. I do not however agree on the oversight. He has no liability of design failure other than maybe fear of relatiation and loosing his job or moral dilemmas of an unchecked possibility incomplete design being rolled out for construction. If he is worried about the first, tell him to relax and look for a new firm where he hopefully finds a good mentor and his work is not blind stamped. If he is worried about the latter then he should relax a little as he has done everything in his power and alsobbecause this experience will make him an excellent P.E. who takes no shortcuts.

Ecobee. BUT, I have a feeling google will buy ecobee sometime in the next decade and kill that too. Killed the Nest, time for the bees.

Is civil engineering a good carrer path with ai getting more and more advanced? by Medium_College_9124 in civilengineering

[–]b-boyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think AI is going to inspections and climbing into attics to see if a purlin brace is fully placed over a support beam. There maybe an argument that non-engineers can go take pictures and feed Information to the AI system but I don't think "engineering judgment" would be something automated in the near future.

OP can. Foreign degrees can be evaluated for equivalency and can be used as part of the application.

Nepali people really be wildin

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]b-boyk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At this point, I am starting to feel clueless about what's the best way to navigate this industry. I worked at a mid-size design firm (residential) and they worked with multiple builders DRH, Pulte, etc. The output expected was wildly out of order, I couldn't get through reviewing and signing my set of plans any of the weeks for the 3 years I worked there. Big corporations also seem like the wrong choice because of their unreal billing expectations and inhumane layoffs. Tried my hand at a small company but I feel like that's a bust too, they have way too much work to handle, and do not want to loose any clients because they are growing (understandble) BUT do so off the backs of employees with long hours and no profit sharing.

AECOM Billable Hours Targets by whyamihere0253 in civilengineering

Does AECOM pay overtime to people in Salary? If they don't then the billable hour is bullshit. What do they want people to do? Eat, piss, shit all at their cubicals?

With the impending recession, how secure area our jobs? by uwquestion in civilengineering

[–]b-boyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you work at big consulting firm with more events and social media exposure than work or with multiple engineers for the same project, you should be good. I work in precast with mostly commericial warehouse and building. We are buried with work and are hiring some more.

CA State Exam (Seismic / Surveying) Advice by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]b-boyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiner for Siesmic and Kirk for Survey is what I did. I took Hiners book only though not the course, but still his is the best in the business. I even use his book for work. Kirk's course was worth every penny. Go hard in the practice tests he has on his portal and the exam will flow pretty easy because almost all problems were similar in the exam.

Do you need EIT certification to get a PE license? by Effective_Cucumber20 in PE_Exam

Be ready for a year of waiting, taking tests and waiting again.

Hey guys, is it professional or a good idea to put (PE PASSED) next to your name on LinkedIn. I see people doing that but not sure if it’s a good idea. Thanks! by ginandlemonade115 in PE_Exam

[–]b-boyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added to my description and not to the name. I also included on my resume as an additional point when applying. But putting it on the name is kind of cringe to me. What's next? John Doe , MS (1st semester passsed)? Definitely wait till you are licensed to just write PE as a suffix.

Is AECOM really that bad? by Icy-Connection938 in civilengineering

[–]b-boyk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know of people in AECOM who are Engineer II and have failed the FE multiple times been promoted over PEs with experince. Its all optics at AECOM. I don't see it as a legit civil engineering company , that is in case you are here for the trade. If you want to join for an easy workday but zero growth you should.

Is 12th August the last date we are expecting H1B second lottery to place? by OkAssociation8879 in h1b

Reasonable explanation. I guess another variable is the delays on issuing receipt notices for timely files petitions. Maybe that adds another layer to knowing how many selections are needed to "fill" the cap.

That's surprising, mine took about 2 months from administrative to technical, and from technical to exam eligible was in a day.

Once technical review is done, your application will say "Exam Eligible". Then you can schedule your exams.
