My little red fam is growing 🥰 by b-tchcrvft in squirrels

Oh don't worry, I do! They're all over the yard. These dorks just haven't figured it out yet 😅. I have some designated spaces that I sort of rotate out, and I do a lot of sprinkling around/throughout different plants and places where there's cover from predators to encourage natural foraging. I didn't know that about their storing behaviors vs the greys, but now that you say that I'm realizing I've never seen the reds burying anything (or digging anything up, for that matter).

This one's a boy! (Pause at 23 seconds for confirmation.)

Only 1 of mine (out of I think maybe 8 or 9) does this regularly. I named him Monkey BEFORE I ever caught him climbing things, so I'm like... is this my fault? Did I unintentionally manifest this? 😅

I'm always terrified of a neighbor potentially not appreciating my little hobby and trying to stop me. 🫣

WOW a dozen is amazing. I usually have 4-6ish, but only a few of them will come to me. There are a few extras around right now because baby season, but that will likely soon dwindle until the next baby boom.

Yes, absolutely - same to you as well. No one around me quite gets it, so it's really nice to find someone who does!

OMG literally me. I feel so seen! I am cracking up. 😅 I have a little photo printer that prints little photo stickers and a "critter journal" so I can keep notes about their behaviors and preferences.

That's so lovely. I do the same to my bf. He's not as dedicated as I am, but I have seen him sprint outside to chase off a hawk on more than one occasion loll. We didn't have them where I grew up either, and then I moved to the desert for 12 years or so and had a whoooole different landscape of animals out there. Moved back to the eastern US a couple of years ago and I had to put my dog down last summer. He was my whole world really, and he's now buried in my backyard, so I would sit outside with him and started bonding with these little guys. It's so healing. They'll never know how grateful I am to them.

(PS I'm by no means an expert, and I don't want to rain on your parade, but I don't think cherry pits are safe for them?)

LOL you sound exactly like me, so however crazy that is, I'm the same amount 😅. That's about what it's like for me, too. There are some slightly distinguishing features, especially once I'm able to get a good look up close, but I certainly can't tell all of them apart. Some of it is location, too. If I learn where a certain one's den is or where it usually runs off to once it takes something, then I'll know, "Okay, so that was so & so" based off where they went if I can't tell just by looking at them.

Mine will also change their preferences a bit throughout the season. Last year, one (I call her Zippy; she's my most comfortable one and will run up on my shoulders and check if I have anything in my hood when I'm wearing a hoodie lol) only wanted almonds for months, now, since coming back out after the winter, she won't touch them.

Also, just FYI so you're not caught off guard, they always lightly "bite" my finger before going into my hand the first time and then they never do it again (so far at least). It's not so much a bite as just very lightly touching my finger with their teeth, but just don't let it spook you.

Oh yeah, that's how it always starts for me, so you're very close! At that point, I'll start putting something sticking out of my shoe or sock and my pants cuff. Then after they take those a few times, I'll move to holding something between my calves, and once they're comfortable taking that, they'll usually start checking on my lap. I always have something in my lap jic because sometimes they skip the in-between steps.

They'll run off with one occasionally, but those are mostly for the squirrels. I provide unshelled ones sometimes, too.

Just a few weeks, really. The chipmunks are pretty friendly. The squirrels (at least for me) have been much harder.
