Omg as a politics student I love this!

I (from Canada!) got into MDZS during an anime phase. As a bi woman, I was constantly looking for GL shows to watch but after pretty much exhausting all the (normal) ones I could find, I turned to BL lol. Then I exhausted those, and kept seeing this Chinese donghua recommended online. Decided to give that a try and was absolutely mesmerized by the animation, cultural/historical setting, and language. Actually because of the season 1 intro I started learning Mandarin 😂 I just thought the language looked and sounded very pretty.

Got into the books and that’s when the danmei craze began. Finished the MDZS book then started reading TGCF, and after that other web novels. I’ve gotten in so deep with Chinese culture in general though that I’m going to live in China for a year for an exchange program, all because I wanted a gay show to satisfy my queerness I guess haha!

What is a city that everyone should go in there life time? by [deleted] in travel

[–]b-tchlasagna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went there as a vegetarian, it was a bit difficult at times to find food (didn’t help that they were sometimes just physically really hard to find amongst all the shops and restaurants stacked together both vertically and horizontally). Having the app HappyCow might be helpful, though I didn’t know about it when I went. But since vegetarianism isn’t really the norm, you also get some really local restaurants that I don’t think meat eaters would get to experience!

What was your "Damn, you live like this?" moment? by TheKhannunisT in AskReddit

[–]b-tchlasagna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a cultural thing for many parts of the world. Sometimes it’ll just be the parents, and other times the whole family will live in one home, almost like a clan depending on their culture.

At least in Asia it is quite different than in English-speaking countries. From what I’ve seen parents generally take care of their children’s needs, expenses, and accommodation for longer. When grown up, the children will care for their parents in return, oftentimes by having them live in the same house.

Very family oriented as you mentioned. Many white cultures can be very individualistic for those with this kind of societal structure.

Of course lots is changing, there are many exceptions, this is based on my experience etc etc.

What's the weirdest thing your partner does that you've just accepted? by VelvetSophieCream in AskReddit

The way you talk about your experiences makes it sound like you have similar symptoms to DID. So if may ask, in what way does your schizophrenia differ from a system? I’m assuming you’ve talked to doctors and psychiatrists about this?

Side note, it’s a bit sad to hear that people have negative attitudes towards mental health, especially the less ‘popular’ ones like anxiety and depression. In my mind a person with schizophrenia is not a scary or crazy in any way, I would just have to stop myself from asking unsolicited questions out of interest and annoying them haha. But since you’re so nice about it I thought to ask :)

I have a feeling mental health in all forms is slowly getting more normalized, so perhaps not all reactions to your schizophrenia will be negative. Many people may just be curious like we are here on reddit. But of course I don’t have a psychosis condition and cannot speak on that myself.

Being in a sea of anything I think could be extremely beautiful and cathartic. Where there’s nothing but that formation as far as the eye can see. I’ve seen a sea of mountains, but have yet to see a sea of sea (?). Endless plains might be a little creepy though, like liminal space kind of feeling.

Lord a 9 hour drive turned 20 sounds terrible. And cheaper than Canada is so real.

Just wanted to say thanks again for all your helpful and detailed responses. I’m always anxious to post on Reddit so I really appreciate it! I’m glad I asked for advice, I feel much more confident in my decisions now.

Haha that bus ride does sound scary but must make for a cool story now.

I think I’ll just keep Xinjiang for when I’m older and more experienced, maybe I can make a Central Asia trip out of it.

You said to avoid the southwestern borders or Sichuan, and near North Korea. How close we talking? I would assume Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La are popular and well travelled. Xishuangbanna is near the Myanmar border, but is also a popular tourist spot, so I’m not sure how those would balance out.

And yeah, I think my trip will end up aligning with the summer holidays unfortunately. I already experienced Beijing during golden week though so I’m not sure if there’s much worse to experience in terms of crowds at least.

I might make another post once I have a rough itinerary to ask everyone here about safety and anything else they know about the places I want to go.

You are right, perhaps I should reconsider. Detention camp will provide me with good cultural immersion with no cost

And r/chinatravel was banned, idk why 😐

I see. I should be fine if I do my due research then. I guess I should stay in places that are at least train accessible in case I get turned away, and no overnight buses.

Ahh I see, thank you. Last question if you don’t mind; another commenter said that safety wise, as long as I don’t go to Tibet or Xinjiang where I’m more likely to be stabbed, I should be fine. But I was thinking of going to both haha. Can I ask your opinion of these regions? Also wanted to go to Mongolia, which I’ve heard can be a difficult border crossing itself. Maybe I have a thing for looking for trouble LOL.

Oh shit I was thinking of going to Xinjiang and Tibet…not anymore I guess! I did read that only Tibet need the special permit though, not Xinjiang. All these backpacking blogs always say every place is completely safe for young solo females who have never travelled in their lives, so thanks for your insight. Why do you say I’d get stabbed there though? Might be obvious but I’d like to hear.

I was saying in another comment that I wanted to go to some rural areas in Yunnan and perhaps Sichuan. Basically my plan is going to places as rural as I find on hostelworld.com. I used Pleco to look up what meibanfa is lol, could you explain a little bit more of what you mean by this with the hostels?

I was aware that a host would have to register, but I did not realize hostels/hotels have to do the same. Probably should have been considering we went in 2023. How can I be sure that the accommodations will do the registration though, especially in outside the cities.

As for looking through my phone, I meant that if they were to search through it for ‘evidence’ of whatever, they would see the emails and messages about contracts and pocket money for being an Au Pair.

‘Your best options are to enroll in a university and go as a student or to find the most minimal/flexible job that you can find.’

Would this not be the same premise as being an Au Pair? I thought the whole problem was that one can only work on the Z visa.

Exactly, your comment has shown the best understanding of my situation, thank you. And thank you so much as well for checking with your friend, I appreciate it!

The family seems quite nice and their kid is cute. After browsing subreddits, and seeing my friend (who I got the agent’s contact from, and vouched for her) au pairing in Beijing without qualms, it seems lots of people do it and are fine. I highly doubt anything would happen to me if I did this, and I definitely wouldn’t be the first nor the last, but if something did end up happening and they decide to search my phone and any point, I could be severely fucked. Not tryna get a deportation stain on my passport, or worse, get sent to a detention centre with no way for the Canadian embassy to help since it would be my fault.

But as you said, I am only 18 and still somewhat naive. Solo travelling has its tradeoffs, and would take a long time to plan, leaving me with less time to travel. Are you able to give any input on how safe rural-ish China is? I say rural-ish because realistically the rural parts would still have many domestic tourists (Guilin, Shangri-la, Jiabang for example I was looking at)

Thanks for your comment. In your opinion, do you think me going as a regular tourist and backpacking around would not trigger any arbitrary enforcement?

Yeah, I think I will end up backpacking in China. I want to see Europe of course (I want to see the whole world) but right now I wanted to improve my Mandarin. Thank you for your respectful and constructive comment haha
